Nuphar luteum

Recognised as a minor homeopathic remedy since the 1800s, but no human trial evidence supports any use.

What is Nuphar luteum? Nuphar luteum is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from the root of the yellow pond lily, a water plant with bright yellow flowers. Homeopaths have used it mostly for low sex drive in men, and for loose stools first thing in the morning. The root is soaked in alcohol to make a starting liquid. That liquid is then watered down again and again, with shaking at each step. At the common strength 30C, none of the plant is left in the final product, so what you take is water, alcohol or a plain sugar pellet. Human trials do not show that this remedy works better than a dummy pill. Its place in the shop rests on old homeopathic case notes, not on test results. Long use in a tradition is not the same as proof that something works, and that holds for every claim on this page. How does Nuphar luteum work? There is no accepted way this remedy could work in the body, because at 30C there is nothing of the plant left to act. Homeopathy uses two ideas. The first is "like cures like": a substance that causes a symptom in a well person is given, in tiny form, to a sick person with that symptom. The second is that shaking at each step of watering down somehow leaves an imprint. That second idea does not fit what we know about chemistry. It has not been shown in a lab. Any change a person notices after taking the remedy is best explained by placebo effect, by the illness settling on its own, or by other care they are getting. What forms does Nuphar luteum come in? You will most often see these forms: Sugar pellets or tablets soaked with the diluted remedy. Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base. Strengths sold as 6C, 12C, 30C or 200C, and sometimes as 3X or 6X. Low strengths such as 1X or the mother tincture do still hold plant material. These are much less common on shop shelves and should only be used with a trained practitioner. Where it comes from: The remedy entered homeopathy in the 1800s, when American homeopaths tested plants growing near them and wrote down what they felt. The notes from those tests became the picture of symptoms the remedy is matched to. The plant itself has a longer past. Some Native American groups used pond lily root as a food and as a poultice, which is a mash laid on the skin. That older use is separate from the homeopathic one. Nuphar luteum has always been a small, side remedy in homeopathy rather than a main one.

Helps

What does Nuphar luteum help with? Low sex drive in men: This is the main use homeopaths list, but no trial supports it. Old homeopathic notes describe a man who has no interest in sex at all, with shrunken, limp genitals. Low sex drive can come from low thyroid, depression, low testosterone, alcohol or medicines, so it is worth a check-up rather than self-treatment. Trouble getting an erection: There is no trial evidence that this remedy helps erections. Homeopaths pick it when the loss of erection comes with a complete loss of interest, not with frustration. Trouble with erections can be an early warning of heart or blood vessel disease and of diabetes, so see a doctor. Semen released without sexual activity: Homeopathic texts list this as a lead symptom, often happening while passing urine or stool. No human study has tested the remedy for it. Frequent unwanted release, or pain with it, needs a medical check to rule out infection or a nerve problem. Early morning loose stools: Old texts describe stools that drive a person out of bed early. No trial has tested this. Loose stools lasting more than a couple of weeks, or with blood, weight loss or fever, need testing by a doctor and not a remedy. Itching around the genitals: This appears in the homeopathic symptom picture and nowhere in trial research. Itching there is usually a rash, thrush, or an infection passed on during sex, and these have clear treatments that work. Get it looked at.

You will most often see these forms:

Sugar pellets or tablets soaked with the diluted remedy.

Where it comes from:

The remedy entered homeopathy in the 1800s, when American homeopaths tested plants growing near them and wrote down what they felt.

Who should avoid Nuphar luteum?

  • Do not use this in place of treatment for erection problems until a doctor has checked your heart, blood pressure and blood sugar.
  • Do not use this for loose stools that have blood in them, or that come with fever or weight loss. See a doctor.
  • Do not stop or cut down any prescribed medicine in order to take this remedy.
  • Do not take the liquid drops if you are avoiding alcohol, are in recovery, or take disulfiram or metronidazole. Use pellets instead.
  • Do not give it to a baby or young child without advice from a doctor.
  • Never use the mother tincture or low dilutions such as 1X on your own; these still contain plant material and have not been tested in people.
  • Do not use the mother tincture or low dilutions if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take the pellets if you have a known allergy to lactose (milk sugar) or to the sugar coating.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your symptoms have not changed after two to four weeks, or if they are getting worse.

Book an appointment soon if you have trouble getting an erection that is new or getting worse, as this can be an early sign of heart or blood vessel trouble. Also get checked for pain, a lump, a discharge, or itching and soreness around the genitals.

Get urgent care for loose stools with blood, black stools, a high fever, bad belly pain, or signs of losing too much fluid such as dizziness, a dry mouth and passing very little urine.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
