What is Pulex irritans? Pulex irritans is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from the common flea. People use it for itchy skin and for a restless, hurried mood. The flea is crushed. Then it is watered down again and again, with shaking at each step. At 30C, so much water has been added that no flea material is left in the pill. Here is the plain verdict. Trials do not show it works better than a dummy pill. Long use inside one tradition is not proof that a thing works. How does Pulex irritans work? Homeopathy rests on two ideas. First, a tiny dose of a thing that causes a symptom may ease that same symptom. Second, shaking the water at each step leaves some trace of the flea behind. Lab tests have not found such a trace. At 30C there is no flea left in the pill to act on your body. So any change you feel is most likely placebo. That means a real sense of help that comes from the act of taking something. The feeling is real. The cause is not the flea. What forms does Pulex irritans come in? The most common form is a small sugar pill or pillule. You may also see liquid drops in water and alcohol. Strengths are shown as 6C, 30C or 200C. A higher number means more water was added, not more power. 30C is the one you will see most often in shops. Where it comes from: Homeopathy began in Germany in the late 1700s. Its founder was Samuel Hahnemann. The flea remedy came later. Healthy people took it and wrote down what they felt. Those notes were gathered in the 1800s and 1900s. It has stayed a small, rarely used remedy. It is not one of the well-known ones.

Helps

What does Pulex irritans help with? Intense itching of the skin: This is the main use homeopaths list for it. It comes from old notes of people who felt itchy after taking the remedy. No human trial has tested it for itching. If your skin is itchy for more than two weeks, see a doctor to find the cause. Night-time itching that wakes you: Old homeopathic notes describe itching that gets worse in bed at night. That is why the remedy is picked for it. There is no trial evidence for this use. Night itching can point to scabies, eczema or liver problems, so get it checked. Restlessness and a rushed, hurried feeling: Homeopaths describe a state of hurry, as if there is not enough time. The remedy is chosen to match that picture. No human trial has looked at this. Talk to a doctor if restless feelings are affecting your work, sleep or relationships. Short temper and irritability: The old notes pair the itching with a cross, impatient mood. Homeopaths treat the two together. There is no trial evidence. Mood changes that last more than a few weeks are worth raising with a doctor. Itching around the genitals: This appears in homeopathic texts as a key sign for the remedy. Use rests on case notes, not tests. Itching in this area often has a clear cause, such as thrush, worms or a skin condition. These have treatments that are known to work, so see a doctor. Trouble falling asleep: Homeopaths link the remedy to a busy mind at bedtime. That use comes from tradition alone. No trial supports it. If poor sleep lasts more than a month, ask your doctor about sleep care that has been tested.

Lab tests have not found such a trace. At 30C there is no flea left in the pill to act on your body.

So any change you feel is most likely placebo. That means a real sense of help that comes from the act of taking something.

The feeling is real. The cause is not the flea.

Who should avoid Pulex irritans?

  • Do not use if you have a serious or fast-moving problem, such as chest pain, a high fever, a deep infection or an asthma attack — get medical care instead
  • Do not use if you would have to stop or delay a medicine your doctor prescribed
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby or a child under 2 without asking a doctor first
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife says it is fine
  • Do not use if you react to lactose (milk sugar) and the pills contain it — check the label
  • Do not use if you avoid alcohol for health, recovery or faith reasons and only the liquid drops are offered
  • Do not use if you have diabetes and cannot account for the sugar in the pills — ask your care team
  • Do not use if the itching has an untreated cause, such as scabies, worms or thrush, that needs a real treatment

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if itching lasts more than two weeks, spreads, or breaks the skin.

Get care sooner if you have a fever, pus, red streaks on the skin, or weight loss with the itch. Yellow skin or eyes with itching also needs same-day care.

Call emergency services if a rash comes with a swollen face or lips, or trouble breathing.

Also talk to a doctor if restlessness or poor sleep goes on night after night.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
