What is MIND Diet? The MIND Diet was developed in 2015 by nutritional epidemiologist Martha Clare Morris at Rush University Medical Center. It stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay — essentially a hybrid of two well-proven eating patterns, tuned specifically for brain protection. It emphasizes ten brain-friendly food groups and limits five harmful ones, making it more targeted than either parent diet. How does MIND Diet work? The MIND Diet works by flooding the brain with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, and key nutrients that protect neurons from oxidative damage and inflammation — two of the biggest drivers of age-related cognitive decline. Foods like leafy greens and blueberries deliver flavonoids and vitamin E that shield brain cells, while healthy fats from olive oil and fish support the structural integrity of brain membranes. The pattern also helps keep blood pressure and blood sugar steady, which matters enormously for long-term brain circulation. What forms does MIND Diet come in? The MIND Diet is a whole dietary pattern — not a pill or extract. It's structured around 10 foods to eat regularly (leafy greens, other vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, whole grains, fish, poultry, olive oil, and wine in moderation) and 5 to minimize (red meat, butter/margarine, cheese, pastries/sweets, and fried or fast food). Even partial adherence — not following it perfectly — has shown meaningful cognitive benefits in research. Where it comes from: Developed in 2015 at Rush University Medical Center by Dr. Martha Clare Morris and colleagues, the MIND Diet emerged from decades of observational research linking specific nutrients to brain aging. It was deliberately built to be more practical and brain-specific than the Mediterranean or DASH diets alone, and the landmark 2015 paper showed striking results that quickly made it one of the most studied dietary interventions for dementia prevention.

Helps

What does MIND Diet help with? Memory decline and brain aging: People who follow the MIND Diet closely tend to have measurably better memory and thinking skills as they get older. Even moderate followers show slower mental aging — research suggests it can make your brain function as if it were years younger than your actual age. Alzheimer's disease risk: This is the MIND Diet's headline strength. Consistent adherence has been linked to dramatically lower rates of Alzheimer's disease in large observational studies. The combination of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory fats, and neuroprotective vitamins appears to reduce the biological processes that lead to plaque buildup in the brain. Dementia prevention: Beyond Alzheimer's specifically, the MIND Diet's overall anti-inflammatory and vascular-protective effects help lower the risk of all forms of age-related dementia. Keeping arteries healthy and reducing brain inflammation are two of the most powerful ways to preserve thinking long-term. Cognitive function and mental sharpness: Regular intake of leafy greens, berries, and healthy fats has been linked to better scores on memory, processing speed, and attention tests — even in middle-aged adults. The diet seems to maintain baseline cognitive performance across multiple domains, not just memory. Depression and mood: Diets rich in the foods the MIND pattern emphasizes — omega-3s, folate, polyphenols, and fiber — are consistently associated with lower rates of depression. The gut-brain axis likely plays a role, as fiber feeds healthy gut bacteria that influence mood-regulating neurotransmitters. High blood pressure (brain-related): The MIND Diet inherits blood pressure-lowering benefits from its DASH Diet roots. Reducing sodium, increasing potassium-rich vegetables, and cutting out processed foods all contribute to better vascular health — which directly protects the brain from silent damage over time. Brain inflammation: Chronic low-grade inflammation is increasingly recognized as a core driver of cognitive aging. The MIND Diet's emphasis on olive oil, leafy greens, berries, and fish — all rich in anti-inflammatory compounds — actively works to cool this process down over the long term. Stroke recovery and brain resilience: Some research suggests that people following Mediterranean-style diets before a stroke have better recovery outcomes. The MIND Diet's vascular and anti-inflammatory benefits may similarly support the brain's ability to repair and adapt after injury. Focus and attention in older adults: Older adults eating more leafy greens, berries, and fish consistently perform better on tests of attention and executive function. These foods supply the nutrients the prefrontal cortex needs to stay sharp, including folate, lutein, and long-chain omega-3s.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
