What is Long Gu (Dragon Bone)? Long Gu — literally 'Dragon Bone' — is one of the oldest and most revered mineral medicines in the Chinese pharmacopoeia. Despite its mythical name, it is the fossilized skeletal remains of large prehistoric mammals, primarily composed of calcium and phosphate minerals. It has been documented in classical texts since the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (roughly 200 CE) and remains widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) today. How does Long Gu (Dragon Bone) work? Modern analysis shows Long Gu is predominantly calcium carbonate and phosphate — minerals with well-understood roles in nerve signaling, muscle relaxation, and neurotransmitter balance. Calcium in particular helps regulate the excitability of nerve cells, and adequate calcium intake is linked to calmer mood and better sleep quality. The trace mineral profile — including magnesium — may add additional nervous system support. What forms does Long Gu (Dragon Bone) come in? Raw Long Gu is added to water decoctions and simmered for 30–60 minutes before other herbs are added. Calcined Long Gu (Duan Long Gu) is used more for stopping leakage — sweating, semen, uterine bleeding — and has a stronger astringent action. Modern practitioners often use it in granule or tablet form as part of classical formulas like Gui Zhi Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang or Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang. Where it comes from: Long Gu has been in continuous clinical use in China for over 2,000 years . It appears in multiple classical texts including the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage, circa 200 CE) by Zhang Zhongjing, where it is paired with Mu Li (oyster shell) in formulas still prescribed today. Historically it was classified as a spirit-calming mineral medicine and used for conditions we would now recognize as anxiety disorders, insomnia, seizure disorders, and emotional instability.

Helps

What does Long Gu (Dragon Bone) help with? Anxiety and restlessness: Long Gu's mineral calcium content helps calm an overexcited nervous system, reducing the feeling of being 'wired but tired.' Classical formulas containing Long Gu — particularly Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang — have been studied for anxiety-related conditions with promising results. Insomnia and poor sleep: By settling nervous system overactivity, Long Gu is one of the go-to herbs in TCM for difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, and vivid or disturbing dreams. It is almost always paired with Mu Li (oyster shell) for sleep applications. Heart palpitations: In TCM terms, Long Gu 'anchors the Heart spirit,' reducing the sense of a racing or fluttering heart that is driven by anxiety or emotional stress rather than a structural cardiac problem. The calcium content may contribute directly to cardiac muscle regulation. Night sweats: Calcined Long Gu is specifically used to reduce excessive sweating — both daytime and nighttime — by its astringent action. It is commonly paired with Mu Li for this purpose in deficiency-pattern presentations. Irritability and emotional instability: Long Gu is used in formulas designed for emotional volatility, mood swings, and outbursts — conditions that might correspond to PMS-related mood changes or stress-induced irritability in modern terms. Premature ejaculation and nocturnal emissions: Calcined Long Gu's astringent properties are applied in TCM to reduce involuntary loss of body fluids, including nocturnal emissions and premature ejaculation, particularly when associated with underlying deficiency or anxiety. Seizure disorders (adjunct support): Historically used as part of multi-herb formulas for seizure-like conditions, Long Gu's calming and anchoring properties made it a classical choice for convulsive disorders. Modern use is only as a complementary adjunct alongside standard care. Excessive sweating: Calcined Dragon Bone is an astringent that helps reduce pathological sweating — whether from nervous system dysregulation, post-illness weakness, or menopausal hot flashes — when combined with other tonifying herbs. Attention and hyperactivity in children: Classical pediatric formulas in TCM included Long Gu for children with restlessness, attention difficulties, and emotional reactivity. Modern TCM practitioners sometimes use it as part of pediatric anxiety and hyperactivity formulas, though clinical evidence in this population is limited.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
