What is Lian Qiao (Forsythia TCM)? Lian Qiao (Forsythia suspensa) is a flowering shrub native to China whose dried fruit has been used in Chinese herbal medicine for over 2,000 years . It is considered a premier 'heat-clearing, toxin-resolving' herb, making it a go-to remedy for infections involving redness, swelling, and fever. You'll rarely see it used alone — it is a cornerstone ingredient in dozens of classical and modern Chinese herbal formulas. How does Lian Qiao (Forsythia TCM) work? Lian Qiao works by supporting your immune system's ability to fight off pathogens while dialing down the inflammatory response that causes pain, swelling, and fever. Its active compounds appear to interfere with the ability of certain bacteria and viruses to thrive, while also helping to regulate the immune signaling molecules (like inflammatory cytokines) that drive symptoms. Think of it as both an immune booster and a natural inflammation modulator working at the same time. What forms does Lian Qiao (Forsythia TCM) come in? In traditional practice, Lian Qiao is almost always prepared as a decoction — simmered with other herbs into a tea. In modern clinical settings across China, it's commonly used in standardized granule or tablet forms, and as a key ingredient in the widely studied formula Shuang Huang Lian injection. Standalone capsules and liquid extracts are available in Western markets for convenient daily use. Where it comes from: Lian Qiao has appeared in Chinese materia medica texts since at least the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (roughly 200 CE), where it was classified as a superior herb. For centuries it has been included in formulas for febrile diseases, skin sores, lymph node swelling, and epidemics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, forsythia-containing formulas (particularly Lian Hua Qing Wen) were included in official Chinese treatment guidelines, significantly reviving global interest in this herb.

Helps

What does Lian Qiao (Forsythia TCM) help with? Fever and early-stage infection: Lian Qiao is considered one of TCM's most important herbs for 'releasing the exterior' — meaning it helps the body push out an infection early, before it digs in deeper. It's commonly taken at the first sign of fever, chills, or sore throat to shorten the course of illness. Sore throat and tonsillitis: Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it particularly useful for throat infections, where it can help reduce redness, swelling, and pain. It is a key ingredient in the classical formula Yin Qiao San, which has been used for centuries specifically for throat and upper respiratory symptoms. Skin infections and acne: Lian Qiao is traditionally used for skin conditions involving heat and toxicity — including boils, abscesses, and acne. Modern research suggests its compounds may inhibit the bacteria (like Staphylococcus aureus) commonly involved in skin infections. Upper respiratory infections and colds: Clinical use in China shows Lian Qiao-containing formulas can help relieve common cold symptoms — congestion, runny nose, mild fever — especially when taken early. It works best as part of a combined herbal formula rather than alone. Flu symptoms: Forsythoside A and phillyrin have shown antiviral activity against influenza strains in research settings. In traditional practice, Lian Qiao is included in formulas prescribed for flu-like illnesses to reduce fever, body aches, and sore throat. Swollen lymph nodes: TCM has long used Lian Qiao specifically for swollen, tender lymph nodes — a sign the body is fighting infection. Its combination of anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions makes it a classical choice for this presentation. Urinary tract infections (mild): Some classical formulas use Lian Qiao for heat in the lower body, which in TCM includes urinary discomfort and burning. Preliminary research on its antimicrobial properties supports this traditional application, though modern UTI treatment should always be evaluated by a doctor. COVID-19 symptom support (adjunct): Lian Hua Qing Wen, a formula containing Lian Qiao as a key herb, was included in Chinese national COVID-19 treatment guidelines. Clinical trials in China evaluated this formula for mild-to-moderate COVID-19 symptoms, finding it may help reduce fever, fatigue, and cough duration when used alongside standard care. Inflammatory skin conditions: Beyond acne and infections, Lian Qiao is used in TCM for inflammatory skin reactions involving redness and heat. Its antioxidant compounds help reduce cellular stress and skin inflammation, and it is sometimes used topically or internally for conditions like eczema flares related to heat.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
