What is Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata)? Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata) is a deciduous tree that blooms with striking orchid-like flowers across South and Southeast Asia. It has been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine for over two thousand years, particularly prized for its bark, which is used in classical formulations like Kanchanar Guggulu. The tree is described in ancient texts as one of the most effective herbs for conditions involving abnormal tissue growths, swollen glands, and sluggish metabolism. How does Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata) work? Kanchanar bark is believed to work by gently stimulating the lymphatic system and supporting the body's natural detox pathways, helping to clear stagnant tissue and reduce swelling. Its flavonoids and tannins have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that may help regulate immune activity and protect glandular tissue. In Ayurveda, it is classified as a Kapha-reducing herb, meaning it helps clear excess fluid, mucus, and heaviness from the body — qualities associated with lymphatic congestion and thyroid sluggishness. What forms does Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata) come in? The traditional preparation is a water decoction of the dried bark, simmered and taken warm. Modern supplements are most commonly available as standardized bark powder in capsules or tablets, often combined with Guggulu resin in the classic Kanchanar Guggulu formula. Paste preparations are used topically for skin conditions and localized swellings. Where it comes from: Kanchanar is referenced in foundational Ayurvedic texts including Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam, where it is classified under 'Lekhana' herbs — those that scrape away excess tissue and toxins. Its most famous formulation, Kanchanar Guggulu, has been used for centuries to treat goitre, cysts, fibroids, and lymph node enlargement. It remains one of the most widely prescribed herbs in contemporary Ayurvedic clinical practice in India.

Helps

What does Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata) help with? Thyroid imbalances (hypothyroidism support): Kanchanar is the most celebrated Ayurvedic herb for thyroid health, especially for sluggish or underactive thyroids. It is thought to support the glandular tissue directly and help regulate thyroid hormone production, making it a common recommendation in Ayurvedic care for both hypothyroidism and thyroid nodules. Swollen lymph nodes and lymphatic congestion: One of Kanchanar's oldest uses is reducing enlarged or swollen lymph nodes, which Ayurveda associates with lymphatic sluggishness and toxin buildup. The herb is believed to gently stimulate lymph flow and help the body clear built-up fluid and immune debris from glandular tissue. Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis): Kanchanar's anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties make it useful in Ayurvedic treatment of chronic skin conditions. By supporting lymphatic drainage and reducing internal inflammation, it may help calm recurring skin flare-ups from the inside out. Cysts and benign growths: The classical Ayurvedic action of 'Lekhana' (scraping away excess tissue) makes Kanchanar a go-to herb for benign cysts, lipomas, and other non-cancerous tissue overgrowths. Kanchanar Guggulu, its most famous formula, is commonly prescribed in Ayurvedic practice for these conditions. Uterine fibroids: In Ayurvedic gynecology, Kanchanar Guggulu is regularly used for uterine fibroids because of its tissue-scraping and hormone-balancing properties. Some women report reduced heaviness and discomfort with consistent use, though modern clinical trials are limited. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): Kanchanar is used in Ayurvedic PCOS protocols because it addresses the Kapha imbalance thought to drive hormonal disruption, cyst formation, and excess tissue growth. It is typically combined with other herbs to support hormonal balance and reduce ovarian cysts. Digestive sluggishness: Kanchanar has mild digestive-stimulating properties and is used to address bloating, sluggish bowels, and poor nutrient absorption. Its bitter and astringent tastes are considered tonifying for the gut lining in Ayurvedic theory. Neck swelling and goitre: Goitre — visible enlargement of the thyroid gland — is one of the most historically documented uses of Kanchanar in Ayurvedic medicine. Ancient texts describe it as a primary remedy for neck swellings, and it remains widely used for this purpose in integrative Ayurvedic practice today. Inflammation and joint discomfort: The flavonoids and tannins in Kanchanar bark have measurable anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce general inflammatory burden in the body. It is sometimes included in Ayurvedic joint formulas to help ease stiffness and swelling. Liver and detox support: Kanchanar is considered a gentle liver support herb in Ayurveda, helping the body process and clear waste products more efficiently. Its antioxidant compounds may help protect liver cells from oxidative stress.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
