Juan Bi Tang

Traditional standing is strong and well documented across centuries of Chinese practice, but human evidence grade is insufficient: trials are few, small

What is Juan Bi Tang? Juan Bi Tang is a traditional Chinese herbal formula. Its name is often translated as Remove Painful Obstruction Decoction. It was given for aching, stiff, heavy joints and limbs. It is a blend, not one plant. Most versions hold eight to twelve dried herbs, boiled together. Typical members include Qiang Huo, Du Huo, Qin Jiao, Dang Gui, cinnamon bark and licorice root. The honest verdict: human evidence is thin and of low quality. Long use in a tradition is not proof that something works, and it is not proof that it is safe. Treat this formula as unproven. It also carries real safety limits. Licorice in the mix can raise blood pressure and drop potassium. Several herbs may add to the effect of blood thinners. How does Juan Bi Tang work? No one has shown how Juan Bi Tang works in the human body. The traditional explanation is not a drug mechanism. In Chinese medicine, bi means blocked flow of qi and blood. Wind, cold and damp were said to lodge in the joints. The formula was meant to open that blockage, warm the limbs and move blood. Modern lab work has mostly tested single herbs from the mix. In test tubes and in animals, some lower markers of inflammation. Whether that happens inside a person's joints is not established. A few animal studies of the whole formula report less joint swelling and less pain behaviour. Animal results often fail to repeat in people. Read them as early hints, not as proof. The licorice effect is better understood. In people, licorice can act a little like a salt-holding hormone. That is why it may raise blood pressure and lower potassium. What forms does Juan Bi Tang come in? Juan Bi Tang is sold in a handful of ready-made forms. Common forms: - Raw dried herbs, boiled at home into a decoction (a strong tea) - Granules or powder that dissolve in hot water - Pills or capsules of concentrated extract - Pre-made liquid vials or bottled syrups Traditionally it was a decoction made fresh. Granules are now the usual form outside China. Strength varies a lot between brands. Two products with the same name may use different herbs and different amounts. Quality is the bigger worry. Imported herb products have at times been found to hold heavy metals, hidden drugs or the wrong plant. Buy only from a seller who tests each batch and lists every herb. Where it comes from: Juan Bi Tang was recorded in Chinese medical writing from the Song dynasty, roughly 900 years ago. Several formularies carried a version under this name. Two lines came down to us. One is built around Qiang Huo, Du Huo and Qin Jiao for wind-damp joint pain. The other, from Bai Yi Xuan Fang, leads with Huang Qi for people seen as weak and tired. It was prescribed by trained practitioners after a pattern diagnosis. The mix was adjusted for each person and reviewed often. It was not a shelf product people picked for themselves. It still appears in Chinese medicine teaching texts today. That standing tells you it was used widely and for a long time. It does not tell you that it helps.

Helps

What does Juan Bi Tang help with? Joint pain and stiffness (rheumatic complaints): This is the formula's main traditional use. Practitioners gave it for sore, stiff, heavy joints linked to wind, cold and damp. Human evidence is weak. The few trials are small, poorly reported and mostly from one country. None show clearly that it beats a dummy treatment. Rheumatoid arthritis, used alongside drug treatment: Some Chinese trials added the formula to standard drugs for rheumatoid arthritis. They reported less pain and shorter morning stiffness. These studies were small and rarely blinded. That makes the results easy to overstate. It is not a substitute for methotrexate or other prescribed treatment. Osteoarthritis pain: Tradition used it for the aching, wear-related joint pain of older people. Modern testing in osteoarthritis is very limited. A few small studies hint at modest pain relief. The quality is too low to rely on. Neck, shoulder and back aching: Classical texts list shoulder and upper back pain among its targets. Qiang Huo in particular was tied to the upper body. No good human trial has tested the formula for neck or shoulder pain. Any benefit is unproven. Numbness or heaviness in the arms and legs: Numb, heavy limbs were seen as a sign of blocked flow, which this formula aimed to open. There is no human evidence for this use. New or spreading numbness needs a medical check, not a herb. It can signal nerve or spinal problems. Joint pain that feels worse in cold or damp weather: The warming herbs, such as cinnamon bark and ginger, were chosen for cold-type pain. People were said to feel better with heat and worse with damp. This pattern is a traditional way of sorting patients. It has not been tested as a way to predict who responds.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
