Huiryeom is a dried herb used in Korean medicine for aching, stiff joints and for limbs that feel heavy, numb or weak. It is a single drug (Korean), not a mixed formula. Latin: Sigesbeckia pubescens; also known as Siegesbeckia, or St. Paul's wort herb.
Korean practitioners give it for what tradition calls wind-damp patterns: long-standing joint and low-back pain that feels worse in cold, wet weather. Older texts also use it as a wash for itchy skin, and some modern East Asian practice uses it as a support herb in high blood pressure (hypertension).
Here is the honest verdict up front. The traditional record is long and consistent across several East Asian traditions, but good human trial evidence is close to absent. A long history of use is not proof that something works, and we say that once here rather than repeating it in every section.
Nobody has shown how huiryeom works in people. The idea behind it is anti-inflammatory action, which would fit the traditional use for swollen, painful joints.
The best-studied compound, kirenol, has reduced joint swelling and inflammatory signals in rodent arthritis models. Other animal work hints at a mild drop in blood pressure and some effect on immune cells.
Lab and animal results often fail to carry over to humans. Treat everything in this section as a plausible idea, not a settled fact.
The usual form is the dried above-ground parts — leaf, stem and flowering top — cut for decoction (simmered as a strong tea).
You will also find powdered herb, granules, capsules and alcohol tinctures. Traditional Korean and Chinese practice uses a wine-steamed version as well, which old texts describe as gentler on the stomach.
External preparations exist too, such as washes and poultices for itchy skin. These are traditional uses only and have not been tested in trials.
Huiryeom has been recorded in East Asian medicine for well over a thousand years. Chinese materia medica listed the plant (as xixiancao) by the Tang dynasty, and Korean works including the Donguibogam carry it for joint, back and limb complaints.
Japanese Kampo practice uses the same plant for similar problems. That spread across several related traditions is why it sits high on the traditional axis, even though the modern evidence axis stays weak.
See a doctor promptly if a rash, hives, swelling of the lips or face, or trouble breathing starts after taking it — that suggests an allergic reaction, and breathing trouble needs emergency care.
Also book an appointment if you notice unusual bruising or bleeding, ongoing vomiting or stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or dizziness and fainting.
Get checked rather than self-treating if a joint becomes hot, red and swollen, if you have a fever with joint pain, or if numbness or weakness in a limb is new or sudden.
Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
