What is Hu Po? Hu Po is amber. It is the hard, fossil resin of pine trees that died millions of years ago. In Chinese medicine it is ground to a fine powder and used to settle the mind. Practitioners give it for poor sleep, a pounding heart, fright and twitching in children, and for pain when passing urine. It is also mixed into salves for bruises and swelling. Tradition and proof are two separate things. Hu Po has a long, respected record of use, but almost no human trial evidence stands behind it. Nothing here is a cure, and no result is promised. How does Hu Po work? The honest answer is that no one knows. Chinese medicine says Hu Po is heavy and sinking, so it draws a restless spirit back down and calms fear. Modern lab work points to succinic acid, the main acid in amber, as the part of interest. In test tubes and in animals it has been studied for calming and anti-swelling effects. That work does not tell you what happens in a person who swallows amber powder. Amber barely dissolves in water, so how much of it your gut can take up is unclear. What forms does Hu Po come in? Hu Po is nearly always used as a fine powder. Common forms include: Loose powder, stirred into warm water or swallowed with a drink. Pills and granules, often mixed with other herbs in classic formulas such as Hu Po Bao Long Wan. Creams, plasters and oils for bruises and sore joints. Amber is not boiled into a tea like most herbs. It does not dissolve, so the powder itself is taken. Where it comes from: Amber has been prized in China for well over a thousand years, first as a gem and then as a medicine. It appears in Tang dynasty writings and is set out clearly in Li Shizhen's Ben Cao Gang Mu (1578). Classic texts group it with the calming, spirit-settling remedies. It sits beside cinnabar and dragon bone in that group, though cinnabar is now avoided because it holds mercury. Amber was also valued in Europe and the Middle East, where powdered amber and amber oil were sold as folk remedies for centuries.

Helps

What does Hu Po help with? Trouble sleeping: This is the main use in tradition. Hu Po is said to be heavy, so it draws a busy mind back down at night. It is often mixed with other calming herbs rather than used alone. No human trial has tested it for sleep. Feeling restless, anxious or on edge: Old texts use Hu Po for fear, worry and a mind that will not sit still. The idea is the same as for sleep. There is no trial in people to show it helps, so treat this as tradition only. Palpitations (a pounding or racing heart): Tradition pairs Hu Po with herbs for a heart that feels like it is racing or thumping. A new or fast heartbeat needs a check first. Get it looked at before you try any herb for it. Fright, night crying and twitching in children: Some old child formulas hold amber for night crying and fits. This use is very old and very common in the texts. No trial backs it. Fits in a child are urgent, so a doctor must see the child first. Pain or blood when passing urine: Chinese medicine also treats Hu Po as a herb that helps urine flow and clears stones and grit. Blood in urine always needs a doctor. It can point to an infection, a stone or something worse. Bruises, lumps and swelling after a knock: Amber powder goes into salves and plasters for bruises and sore joints. The old idea is that it moves stuck blood. We found no human trial of amber creams for injury.

Common forms include:

Loose powder, stirred into warm water or swallowed with a drink.

Pills and granules, often mixed with other herbs in classic formulas such as Hu Po Bao Long Wan.

Creams, plasters and oils for bruises and sore joints.

Amber is not boiled into a tea like most herbs. It does not dissolve, so the powder itself is taken.

Where it comes from:

Amber has been prized in China for well over a thousand years, first as a gem and then as a medicine.

Who should avoid Hu Po?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as it has not been tested in either group.
  • Do not use if you take sleeping pills, sedatives (calming drugs) or strong painkillers, unless your doctor agrees.
  • Do not use if you drink alcohol that day, because both can make you very drowsy.
  • Do not use if you have epilepsy (a condition that causes fits) or take seizure drugs, unless your doctor agrees.
  • Do not use if you are about to drive or use machines.
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease, or take water pills (diuretics), without medical advice.
  • Do not use if you have had a rash or swelling from amber, pine resin or pine pollen.
  • Do not use if you want to give it to a child, unless a qualified practitioner has checked the child first.
  • Do not use if you cannot confirm the product is real amber from a seller you trust.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if you have blood in your urine, pain when you pass urine, or you cannot pass urine at all. These need a proper check, not a herb.

Get urgent help if a child has a fit, or if anyone has chest pain, a fast heartbeat that will not settle, fainting, or trouble breathing.

Stop the herb and call your doctor if you get a rash, itching, a puffy face or lips, or if you feel very sleepy during the day.

Also see your doctor if your sleep or your mood has not improved after three to four weeks.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
