Track Jinjumo with reminders and record whether it helped, in the app.
Jinjumo is the shell of the pearl oyster, ground to a powder. It is a single drug (Korean). The Latin name is Concha Margaritifera, from the pearl oyster Pteria martensii.
Most people know it as mother-of-pearl. Korean and Chinese healers gave it to calm a restless mind. They also used it for poor sleep, a pounding heart, dizziness, and sore or blurry eyes.
Here is the short verdict. Jinjumo has a long record of use, but human studies are almost absent. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works.
Most of Jinjumo is calcium carbonate. That is the chalky mineral found in eggshells and in chalk. In the stomach it acts like a mild antacid (it soaks up stomach acid).
That part is plain chemistry. The calming use is much harder to explain. Old Korean texts group Jinjumo with heavy minerals said to settle or anchor the mind.
No study has shown how a chalky powder could calm the mind or bring sleep. Lab work has looked at the thin protein layer of the shell for bone and wound repair. That work does not tell you what the powder does in a person.
You will most often meet Jinjumo as one of these:
A fine grey-white powder, taken by mouth in water. Crushed or fire-treated shell pieces, boiled with other herbs as a tea (decoction). Pills, tablets or granules that hold it inside a larger Korean formula.
A cosmetic-grade powder is also sold for creams and face masks. That grade is meant for skin, not for eating. Note that Jinjumo (the shell) and pearl powder (the pearl itself) are two different items, even though shops often mix up the names.
Mother-of-pearl has been used in East Asian medicine for many centuries. It appears in Chinese materia medica texts from around the 10th century, and later in Korean practice under the name Jinjumo.
Korean doctors treated it as a heavy, cooling, settling mineral. It was almost never given alone. It sat inside formulas for fright, sleeplessness, a pounding heart and eye complaints.
It also had a second life as a skin and eye powder, and as an ingredient in paints and inlay work.
See a doctor rather than treating yourself if your sleep has been poor for more than three weeks, or if unease is taking over your days. Book an appointment for any pounding or racing heartbeat, dizzy spells, or eye pain and changes in your sight — these need a cause found, not a remedy.
Stop taking it and ring your doctor the same day if you get constant thirst, pass urine much more often, feel weak or muddled, or have pain in your side or back. Those can be signs of too much calcium in the blood or of a kidney stone.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.

HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
