Moschus

Traditional tier T1: a recognised but minor homeopathic remedy drawn from much older musk medicine. Evidence grade insufficient: no human trial supports

What is Moschus? Moschus is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from musk, a strong-smelling paste from a gland of the male musk deer. Homeopaths give it for sudden fainting, panic and strong fear. The musk is watered down again and again, with shaking at each step. At 30C, the usual strength, none of the musk is left. You take a plain sugar pill, water or alcohol. Here is the short answer on proof. Musk has a long past in old medicine, but long use is not proof that a thing works. Trials do not show that homeopathy beats a dummy pill (placebo). How does Moschus work? No one has shown a way that Moschus could work in the body. At 30C there is no musk left to act on a nerve, a gland or an organ. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is that a substance that causes signs in a well person can ease the same signs in a sick person. The second is that shaking and watering down make a remedy act more strongly. Chemistry does not back the second idea. Most of what people feel after a 30C pill is likely placebo. That means you feel better because you expect to. What forms does Moschus come in? Moschus comes as small sugar pills or pellets. It also comes as liquid drops in alcohol and water. Common strengths are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. The higher the number, the more times it was watered down. Shops mostly sell 30C. Moschus is also sold inside mixed homeopathic products for nerves or sleep. Check the label, since these hold other remedies too. Where it comes from: Musk was a costly medicine long before homeopathy began. It was used in Chinese medicine, in Ayurveda and Unani, and in old European medicine. Healers held it under the nose to rouse people who had fainted. Homeopaths added Moschus to their remedy books in the 1800s. It has stayed a small, second-line remedy for fear and fainting spells. The musk deer is now endangered. Trade in real musk is banned or tightly controlled in most countries.

Helps

What does Moschus help with? Fainting spells (syncope): This is the oldest use for musk and the main use in homeopathy. No human trial has tested Moschus for fainting. Fainting can come from heart, blood pressure or blood sugar problems, so it needs a real check-up first. Panic and sudden strong fear: Homeopathic books describe a person who feels wild fear and cannot get a breath. There is no trial evidence behind this use. Talking therapy and, for some people, prescribed medicine have far better proof. Feeling of a lump or tight band in the throat: Old homeopathic texts list this as a lead sign for Moschus. No study has tested it. A new lump feeling with trouble swallowing should be checked by a doctor. Shaky, tense spells with chest tightness: Homeopaths pick Moschus when tension comes on fast and the person seems to lose control. This rests on case reports, not trials. Chest tightness always needs a medical check first. Palpitations (a pounding or racing heartbeat): Homeopathic use here is traditional only. No trial has looked at Moschus for heart rhythm. A fast or skipping heartbeat can be serious and needs proper testing. Feeling icy cold with anxiety: Cold hands and body during fear is a classic Moschus picture in homeopathy. There is no lab or trial work to support it. Take it as a tradition, not a proven effect.

Where it comes from:

Musk was a costly medicine long before homeopathy began.

Who should avoid Moschus?

  • Do not use Moschus in place of emergency care if you faint, black out, or have chest pain, a racing heart or trouble breathing.
  • Never stop or cut down a prescribed medicine for your heart, blood pressure, seizures or mental health in order to take this remedy.
  • Do not use low-strength musk products such as 1X or a mother tincture if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, because raw musk was traditionally used to bring on periods.
  • Do not use the alcohol-based drops if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, in recovery from alcohol use, or taking disulfiram or metronidazole.
  • Do not give the alcohol-based drops to a child under 12 without advice from a doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not take the sugar pellets if you have galactosaemia or another rare inherited sugar disorder that means you cannot handle milk sugar.
  • Avoid any product made from real musk deer gland, as the musk deer is an endangered animal and the trade is illegal in many countries.
  • Do not use this remedy as your only treatment for a panic disorder, a heart rhythm problem or repeated fainting.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor soon if you faint more than once, faint without warning, or faint while exercising. Get urgent help if fainting comes with chest pain, a pounding or uneven heartbeat, breathlessness, or a bad headache. Call emergency services if someone does not wake up quickly after passing out.

Also see a doctor if panic attacks keep coming back, if fear stops you leaving the house, or if you have thoughts of harming yourself. Stop the remedy and get help if you get a rash, swelling of the lips or face, or trouble breathing after taking it.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
