What is Grounding (Earthing)? Grounding (earthing) means physically connecting your body to the earth's surface so that electrons can flow freely between the ground and you. The earth carries a subtle negative electrical charge, and when you walk barefoot or use a conductive device connected to the ground, your body absorbs those electrons. Humans have lived in near-constant contact with the earth for most of history — shoes with conductive leather soles, sleeping on the ground — and modern insulated rubber and plastic-soled shoes have largely broken that connection. How does Grounding (Earthing) work? The earth's surface is rich in free electrons, and your body's tissues readily absorb them through direct skin contact. These electrons act as natural antioxidants, neutralizing positively charged free radicals that drive inflammation and oxidative stress. Grounding also appears to stabilize the body's electrical environment, which influences the autonomic nervous system — shifting it toward the calmer, rest-and-digest state — and helps normalize the 24-hour cortisol rhythm that governs sleep and stress. What forms does Grounding (Earthing) come in? The most accessible form is simply walking or standing barefoot on natural ground — grass, damp soil, sand, and natural bodies of water are all conductive. For year-round or indoor use, grounding mats and sheets plug into the grounding port of a standard electrical outlet (no electrical current flows — only the earth connection is used) and allow grounding while working at a desk or sleeping. Conductive-soled footwear is a newer option for daily outdoor use. Where it comes from: Throughout virtually all of human prehistory, people lived in constant electrical contact with the earth — bare feet, natural-fiber clothing, earth-floor dwellings. The concept of deliberately re-establishing this contact as a health practice was formalized in the early 2000s by Clint Ober, a former cable TV executive, who noticed that insulating modern footwear may have disrupted something fundamental. He later collaborated with cardiologist Stephen Sinatra and others to run controlled trials, and a growing body of peer-reviewed research has followed.

Helps

What does Grounding (Earthing) help with? Inflammation and chronic pain: Grounding appears to calm the body's inflammatory response by flooding tissues with electrons that neutralize the free radicals behind tissue damage and pain. People with chronic pain conditions have reported measurable reductions in pain and inflammation markers after regular grounding sessions. Sleep problems and insomnia: Grounding while sleeping — using a conductive sheet — has been shown to help normalize the daily rise-and-fall pattern of cortisol, the hormone that should peak in the morning and taper at night. When that rhythm is off, sleep suffers; grounding seems to help reset it, leading to deeper, more restful sleep. Stress and anxiety: Direct contact with the earth shifts the nervous system toward a calmer state, reducing the physical markers of stress like elevated heart rate and muscle tension. Many people describe a noticeable sense of calm that settles in within minutes of barefoot contact with natural ground. Fatigue and low energy: Chronic inflammation and poor sleep are two of the biggest drivers of persistent fatigue — both of which grounding appears to address. Users often report improved energy levels and a sense of vitality after establishing a regular grounding practice. Poor circulation: Early research suggests grounding may reduce the clumping of red blood cells (a process called aggregation) and improve blood viscosity, which helps blood move more freely through small vessels. This could have meaningful benefits for people with sluggish circulation or cardiovascular risk. Exercise recovery and muscle soreness: Grounding after intense exercise has been studied for its effect on delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Participants who grounded after physical exertion showed lower inflammatory markers and reported less pain and faster recovery compared to those who did not. High cortisol and hormonal imbalance: Grounding during sleep was shown in one controlled study to significantly normalize the 24-hour cortisol curve — the daily hormonal rhythm that governs energy, stress, immunity, and sleep. A well-regulated cortisol pattern supports overall hormonal balance. Mood and emotional wellbeing: Participants in grounding studies have reported improvements in mood, reduced feelings of tension, and a greater sense of overall wellbeing. The calming effect on the nervous system likely plays a central role in these emotional benefits. Cardiovascular health markers: Grounding appears to have a mild blood-thinning effect by improving the surface charge on red blood cells, reducing their tendency to clump together. This is thought to support healthier blood flow and reduce one risk factor associated with cardiovascular events.

Quick Facts

  • What it is: Grounding (earthing) is the practice of making direct physical contact with the earth's surface — barefoot on soil, grass, sand, or using conductive grounding mats — to allow your body to absorb the earth's natural electrical charge.
  • Main uses: Most commonly used to reduce inflammation, improve sleep, lower stress, and support recovery from pain and fatigue.
  • Best for: Inflammation and chronic pain, Sleep problems, Stress and cortisol imbalance
  • Active ingredients: Free electrons from the earth's surface, Negatively charged ion transfer
  • Forms: Barefoot outdoor contact (grass, soil, sand, natural bodies of water), Grounding mats (indoor), Grounding sheets, Grounding wrist/ankle bands, Grounding footwear (conductive soles)
  • Time to effect: Some people notice improved sleep and reduced pain within a few days to 4 weeks of consistent practice.
  • Side effects: Grounding is extremely safe for most people; those using pacemakers or certain electrical implants should consult a doctor before using indoor grounding devices.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
