Home

What is it? Topical green tea extract is derived from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. It is used in various skincare products due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. These characteristics make it beneficial for medicinal and cosmetic applications, particularly in protecting the skin from environmental stressors, reducing inflammation, and improving skin health. How does it work for medicinal purposes? The extract works primarily through its high content of polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is a potent antioxidant. EGCG neutralizes free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and preventing cellular damage. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce skin redness and swelling, while its antimicrobial action can reduce acne-causing bacteria on the skin. What are the active ingredients that are important for its medicinal properties? The most important active ingredient in topical green tea extract is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a type of catechin known for its powerful antioxidant properties. Other polyphenols and flavonoids in the extract also contribute to its medicinal benefits. What forms does it come in? Topical green tea extract is available in various forms, including creams, lotions, serums, gels, and face masks, catering to different skincare needs and preferences. What if I have an imbalance or deficiency? There isn't a recognized deficiency state for topical green tea extract since it's not an essential nutrient. However, skin lacking antioxidant protection might appear more aged, with increased wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and more pronounced damage from UV exposure and pollutants. When was it first used for medicinal purposes? The use of green tea for medicinal purposes dates back thousands of years in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. However, its specific use in topical formulations for skin health has become prominent over the last few decades as research into its benefits has expanded.

Helps

What does Green tea extract (topical) help with? Acne and breakouts: Green tea extract reduces two key drivers of acne: excess oil production and skin inflammation. Applied regularly, it helps shrink the appearance of pores, calm active breakouts faster, and reduce the redness that makes pimples look worse. Oily and congested skin: EGCG has a well-studied ability to dial down sebum production by interfering with the hormonal signals that tell oil glands to overproduce. Regular use can visibly mattify the skin and reduce that midday shine without stripping moisture. Sun damage and UV protection: When applied before or after sun exposure, green tea extract helps neutralize free radicals triggered by UV rays and reduce the inflammatory response that leads to sun damage. It's not a sunscreen replacement, but it's a meaningful partner to one. Skin aging and wrinkles: Catechins protect collagen from breakdown by blocking enzymes that degrade it, while also fighting the oxidative stress that ages skin over time. Studies in people have shown improvements in skin elasticity and a reduction in fine lines with consistent topical use. Redness and skin inflammation: Green tea's anti-inflammatory catechins calm the skin's inflammatory response, making it helpful for anyone prone to flushing, sensitivity, or general skin irritation. It's one of the gentler anti-inflammatory options for reactive skin types. Uneven skin tone and dark spots: EGCG can gently inhibit melanin production, which over time may help lighten post-breakout dark spots and support a more even complexion. Results are gradual but clinically documented with regular use. Seborrheic dermatitis: Green tea extract's anti-inflammatory and mild antifungal properties make it a useful supportive treatment for the flaky, irritated patches of seborrheic dermatitis, particularly on the face and scalp. Rosacea-prone skin: For people with rosacea, green tea's combination of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and blood-vessel-calming effects (partly thanks to caffeine) can help reduce flushing frequency and background redness with regular use. Under-eye puffiness: Caffeine and catechins in green tea extract work together to temporarily constrict blood vessels and reduce fluid retention under the eyes, which is why green tea is one of the most common active ingredients in eye creams and de-puffing patches. Genital warts (HPV-related): This is one of the most evidence-backed uses: a 15% EGCG ointment (Veregen/Polyphenon E) has FDA approval for treating external genital and perianal warts caused by HPV, making it the first botanical prescription drug approved in the US.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
