What is Dashamularishta? Dashamularishta is one of Ayurveda's most revered classical fermented tonics, prepared by macerating the 'Dashamula' — the famous group of ten medicinal roots — along with herbs, jaggery, and Dhataki flowers that act as a natural fermenting agent. The fermentation process, called 'sandhan kalpana', generates a small amount of natural alcohol (typically 5–10% ) which both preserves the formula and helps carry the fat-soluble active compounds into the body more efficiently. It has been used for over a thousand years and appears in classical texts including the Ashtanga Hridayam and Charaka Samhita. How does Dashamularishta work? The ten roots that form the backbone of this formula are divided into two groups — the 'Brihat Panchamula' (five larger roots with anti-inflammatory and respiratory benefits) and the 'Laghu Panchamula' (five smaller roots with nervine and tonic effects). Together, they work to calm inflammation, support the nervous system, strengthen lung function, and rebuild depleted energy reserves. The fermentation base improves bioavailability and makes the formula easier on digestion than a simple water decoction. What forms does Dashamularishta come in? The traditional liquid arishta form is considered most potent because fermentation enhances the bioavailability of active compounds. Tablets and capsules offer convenience but may not fully replicate the synergistic effect of the fermented liquid. When choosing a product, look for GMP-certified Ayurvedic manufacturers who follow classical fermentation protocols (typically 30–45 days of fermentation). Where it comes from: Dashamularishta is referenced in classical Ayurvedic texts dating back at least 1,500 years . It holds a particularly important place in postpartum care in traditional Indian medicine — new mothers were routinely given this tonic for 40 days after delivery to rebuild strength, support milk production, reduce postpartum body aches, and stabilize mood. It remains one of the most widely used classical Ayurvedic formulas in Indian clinical practice today.

Helps

What does Dashamularishta help with? Postpartum recovery and weakness: This is Dashamularishta's most celebrated traditional use. After childbirth, the body is depleted of nutrients, energy, and structural support — the formula is thought to rebuild vital force (ojas), reduce postpartum body aches, support uterine recovery, and stabilize mood. Generations of Ayurvedic practitioners have used it for the full 40-day postpartum period. Joint pain and body aches: Several of the ten roots have well-documented anti-inflammatory properties that help calm swollen, stiff, or aching joints. It's commonly used for vata-type joint pain — the kind that's worse in cold weather, comes with stiffness, and involves a sense of dryness or depletion. Respiratory issues and cough: Kantakari and Brihati — two of the ten roots — are classical bronchodilators in Ayurveda, used specifically for cough, wheezing, and congestion. The formula helps relax the airways, reduce mucus, and soothe respiratory irritation, making it useful for chronic cough and mild asthma-like symptoms. Chronic fatigue and low energy: Dashamularishta is considered a rasayana — a rejuvenating tonic — in Ayurveda, meaning it's designed to rebuild depleted vitality at a deep level. It supports the adrenal-like 'ojas' reserve and helps the body recover from chronic exhaustion, particularly the kind that follows illness, stress, or major life events. Nervous system weakness and anxiety: The Laghu Panchamula group of roots (especially Shalaparni and Prishniparni) is traditionally considered nervine and calming. The formula is used for nervous exhaustion, mild anxiety, and the kind of restless, scattered energy that Ayurveda attributes to vata imbalance in the nervous system. Digestive weakness and bloating: The fermented base and warming herbs in this formula gently stimulate digestive fire (agni) without being harsh. It helps with sluggish digestion, gas, and bloating — particularly the kind associated with weakness or recovery from illness rather than excess or inflammation. Low back pain: Low back pain is one of the classic indications for the Dashamula group of roots in Ayurveda, particularly when it's associated with weakness, fatigue, or a sense of collapse rather than acute injury. The anti-inflammatory and nervine roots work together to support the lumbar region. Sleep problems and restlessness: When poor sleep comes with anxiety, nervous exhaustion, or physical depletion — rather than from excess mental stimulation — Dashamularishta is traditionally indicated. The nervine roots calm the system and help restore the kind of deep, restorative sleep that rebuilds the body. Muscle wasting and debility after illness: This formula is a go-to Ayurvedic tonic for rebuilding muscle mass and strength after prolonged illness, surgery, or any period of forced inactivity. It's considered anabolic in the Ayurvedic sense — supporting tissue rebuilding and nutrient assimilation. Hormonal imbalance in women: Traditionally used for irregular periods, premenstrual discomfort, and reproductive system weakness in women. The formula is thought to support the female reproductive system by reducing inflammation and rebuilding the tissues and energy reserves that regulate normal hormonal cycles.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
