What is Chlorum? Chlorum is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from chlorine gas. In homeopathy (a system that uses very dilute remedies), it has been given for breathing complaints such as a tight chest, a barking cough and a hoarse voice. The remedy is made by diluting the source again and again, with shaking between each step. The common strength, 30C, means that step has been repeated 30 times. At that point essentially none of the original chlorine is left in the pellet or drop. Here is the plain verdict on the evidence. Trials of homeopathic remedies do not show effects beyond placebo (a dummy treatment with no active drug), and no trial has tested Chlorum itself. Long use inside a tradition tells you what healers did; it is not proof that a remedy works. How does Chlorum work? There is no known way for Chlorum to act on the body, because there is no measurable chlorine left in it. Homeopathy works from the idea of "like cures like". Chlorine gas irritates the airways, so homeopaths gave the diluted form for airway complaints. They also hold that shaking leaves an imprint of the source in the water or sugar. That idea has not been shown to happen. No test has found such an imprint, and no body process is known that could respond to it. Any relief people report is best explained by placebo, by time, or by other treatment they are also taking. What forms does Chlorum come in? Chlorum is sold as tiny sugar pellets, as sugar tablets, and as liquid drops in alcohol and water. Pellets are the most common form and are meant to melt under the tongue. Drops are usually taken in a little water. Labels show a potency such as 6C, 30C or 200C. A higher number means more rounds of dilution, not a stronger drug. Where it comes from: Chlorine gas was first made in 1774 by the Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele. It was later used to bleach cloth and to make water safe to drink. Homeopaths took it up in the 1800s. They tested it on healthy volunteers, wrote down the symptoms, and listed it in their reference books for croup-like coughs and breathless spells. Chlorum has always been a minor, rarely used remedy. It is far less used than staples such as Arnica or Belladonna.

Helps

What does Chlorum help with? Barking, croup-like cough: This is the classic reason homeopaths reached for Chlorum. No human trial has tested it for croup. Croup in a child can get worse fast, so a child who is struggling to breathe needs a doctor, not a remedy. Sudden tight chest and hard breathing: Old homeopathic books describe spasm-like chest tightness as a key picture for this remedy. There is no trial evidence behind that. Asthma and other breathing attacks need proven medicines and urgent care. Hoarse voice and raw throat: Tradition links Chlorum to a rough, hoarse voice with a raw feeling in the throat. This use rests on symptom notes from the 1800s. No study has tested it in people. Dry, irritated airways after breathing fumes: Because chlorine gas stings the airways, homeopaths gave the diluted form for that same picture. This is reasoning by likeness, not by test results. Real fume exposure needs fresh air and medical review.

Where it comes from:

Chlorine gas was first made in 1774 by the Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Chlorum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Chlorum?

  • Do not use if you or your child is struggling to breathe, gasping, or turning blue or grey around the lips — call emergency services now
  • Do not use if you are having an asthma attack; use your reliever inhaler and get help
  • Do not use if you would stop, skip or lower any prescribed medicine in order to try it
  • Do not use if you have breathed in chlorine gas, bleach fumes or pool chemicals — that needs fresh air and urgent medical care
  • Do not use if you are treating a child under 2 without a doctor's advice, as croup in small children can turn serious quickly
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole and the product is the alcohol-based liquid
  • Do not use if you cannot have milk sugar or need to avoid sugar, unless you check the pellet ingredients first
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without telling your midwife or doctor
  • Do not use if you are swallowing anything other than a labelled homeopathic product — never drink bleach or any chlorine solution

When should you see a doctor?

Get emergency help straight away for hard or noisy breathing, gasping, blue or grey lips, chest pain, or a child who cannot speak in full sentences.

See your doctor soon if a cough lasts more than three weeks, if you cough up blood, if you have a fever that will not settle, or if you are short of breath doing things you used to manage easily.

Also see your doctor if hoarseness lasts more than three weeks, since a lasting voice change should always be checked.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
