What is Camu Camu? Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a small, tart berry native to the floodplains and riverbanks of the Amazon rainforest, particularly in Peru and Brazil. It has been used by indigenous Amazonian communities for generations as both a food and a natural remedy. What sets it apart from other fruits is its extraordinary vitamin C content — gram for gram, far higher than oranges — along with a rich cocktail of polyphenols and antioxidants. How does Camu Camu work? The primary driver behind Camu Camu's benefits is its vitamin C, which the body uses for immune cell production, collagen synthesis, and neutralizing free radicals that damage cells. Unlike synthetic vitamin C supplements, Camu Camu delivers its ascorbic acid alongside plant compounds like anthocyanins and ellagic acid, which may help enhance absorption and add independent anti-inflammatory effects. Together these compounds help calm oxidative stress — a root contributor to aging, inflammation, and chronic disease. What forms does Camu Camu come in? Freeze-dried powder preserves the most vitamin C and polyphenols and mixes easily into smoothies or water. Capsules offer convenience and precise dosing. Juice concentrates are available but may lose some heat-sensitive vitamin C during processing. Always look for products that confirm vitamin C content per serving on the label. Where it comes from: Indigenous peoples of the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon have long harvested Camu Camu as a wild food and folk remedy, using it to support energy, immunity, and general vitality. It entered the global wellness market in the 1990s and has since attracted scientific attention as researchers confirmed its exceptional antioxidant capacity.

Helps

What does Camu Camu help with? Weak immune system: Camu Camu delivers a concentrated dose of vitamin C, which the body uses to build and activate immune cells. Regular intake helps keep your defenses primed, especially during cold and flu season or periods of high stress. Inflammation and oxidative stress: The berry's anthocyanins and ellagic acid act as powerful antioxidants that mop up free radicals before they can damage cells and tissues. Studies have shown measurable reductions in inflammation markers in people who take Camu Camu regularly. Skin health and collagen production: Vitamin C is essential for building collagen — the protein that keeps skin firm, smooth, and youthful. Getting enough from a whole-food source like Camu Camu also protects against UV-related skin damage over time. High blood pressure: Ellagic acid and flavonoids in Camu Camu help relax blood vessel walls and reduce vascular inflammation, which can contribute to modest reductions in blood pressure with consistent use. Blood sugar regulation: Early clinical research suggests Camu Camu may help blunt blood sugar spikes and reduce insulin resistance compared to isolated vitamin C supplements, possibly because the whole-berry polyphenols slow glucose absorption. Gut health and microbiome balance: Camu Camu has shown early evidence of acting as a prebiotic — feeding beneficial gut bacteria and helping reduce gut inflammation. Its polyphenol content appears to shift the gut environment in a healthier direction. Fatigue and low energy: Vitamin C plays a key role in energy metabolism and the production of carnitine, a compound the body needs to convert fat into usable fuel. Camu Camu can help address low-grade vitamin C depletion that quietly drains energy levels. Eye health: The combination of vitamin C and carotenoids in Camu Camu supports the health of the lens and retina, and may help reduce the risk of age-related eye conditions driven by oxidative damage. Mood and stress support: Vitamin C is consumed rapidly during physical and psychological stress, and low levels are linked to lower mood and higher anxiety. Replenishing through Camu Camu may support a calmer stress response and steadier mood. Gum disease and oral health: Vitamin C deficiency is a classic driver of gum inflammation and bleeding. Camu Camu provides a potent natural dose that supports the connective tissue in gums and helps keep oral inflammation in check.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
