What is Bharangi? Bharangi (Clerodendrum serratum) is a woody shrub native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. It holds a prominent place in classical Ayurvedic texts — including the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita — where it is listed as one of the key herbs in formulas for respiratory disease and fever. The root is the primary medicinal part, though the leaves and bark are also used in various traditional preparations. How does Bharangi work? Bharangi works mainly by reducing airway inflammation and helping to clear mucus from the lungs, making it easier to breathe. Its flavonoids and iridoid glycosides appear to calm overactive immune responses that drive wheezing and bronchospasm. It also has fever-reducing and antimicrobial properties that make it useful across a range of respiratory infections. What forms does Bharangi come in? In traditional Ayurvedic practice, Bharangi is most commonly prepared as a root decoction (kwatha) or combined with other herbs in classical formulations such as Bharangyadi Kwatha or Dashamula. Commercially it is now available as standardized capsules and tablets from Ayurvedic manufacturers. The root powder (churna) can be mixed with honey or warm water for direct use. Where it comes from: Bharangi is mentioned in some of the oldest Ayurvedic medical texts, dating back over 2,000 years , where it is classified as a 'shwasahara' herb — one specifically indicated for respiratory diseases including asthma (shwasa) and cough (kasa). It was used extensively across classical Ayurvedic lineages for fever, edema, and throat disorders, and remains an active ingredient in several licensed classical Ayurvedic formulations in India today.

Helps

What does Bharangi help with? Asthma and wheezing: Bharangi has been used as a first-line Ayurvedic herb for asthma for over two thousand years. Its anti-inflammatory compounds help calm the bronchial passages and reduce the hypersensitivity response that causes wheezing and shortness of breath. Regular use as part of traditional formulas like Bharangyadi Kwatha is associated with reduced frequency and severity of asthma episodes. Chronic bronchitis: By loosening sticky mucus and reducing airway inflammation, Bharangi helps the lungs clear out phlegm more easily. This makes it particularly useful for people with long-standing bronchitis who struggle with productive cough and chest tightness day after day. Persistent cough: Bharangi acts as a natural expectorant, thinning mucus and helping it move out of the airways. This addresses the root cause of many stubborn coughs rather than just suppressing the reflex, which is why Ayurvedic practitioners rely on it for coughs that drag on after an infection. Fever (especially from respiratory infections): Classical Ayurvedic texts categorize Bharangi as a 'jwaraghna' — a fever-reducing herb. Its compounds appear to modulate the inflammatory signals that drive fever, helping to bring body temperature down naturally while the immune system does its work. Sinusitis and nasal congestion: Bharangi's ability to reduce swelling and clear mucus extends to the sinuses. It is traditionally used for chronic sinus congestion and is included in formulations aimed at keeping the nasal passages and upper respiratory tract clear. Throat inflammation and laryngitis: The herb's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it useful for soothing a swollen, irritated throat. In traditional practice it is often combined with honey or ginger decoctions for voice loss and throat pain. General body inflammation: Beyond the lungs, Bharangi's flavonoids have shown broad anti-inflammatory activity. Traditional Ayurvedic use includes joint pain and inflammatory conditions where excess heat and congestion are part of the pattern. Edema and fluid retention: Bharangi has traditionally been used as a mild diuretic to reduce swelling and fluid buildup, particularly when associated with respiratory illness or generalized inflammation. Low immunity / frequent infections: As an immune-modulating herb, Bharangi is sometimes included in Ayurvedic protocols for people who repeatedly fall ill with respiratory infections, helping to build resilience over time rather than just treating individual flare-ups.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
