What is Arsenicum sulphuratum rubrum? Arsenicum sulphuratum rubrum is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from realgar, a red rock that holds arsenic and sulphur. Its Latin name is Arsenici disulphidum, and it is also called red arsenic sulphide. It is a single drug. That means it is made from one starting material, not a blend of several. Homeopaths reach for it for itchy skin, hay fever, headaches and low mood. The rock is ground, mixed with liquid, then watered down again and again with shaking at each step. At 30C, not one atom of the rock is left in the product. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a thing works, and trials do not show this remedy beating a dummy pill. How does Arsenicum sulphuratum rubrum work? The honest answer: no one has shown that it works, and there is no known way it could work. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is "like cures like". A thing that causes certain signs in a well person is said to treat those same signs in a sick person. The second idea is that watering a substance down makes it act more strongly. That idea does not match what chemists know about matter. By 30C, a pellet is sugar and water with no source rock in it. So there is no way for it to act on your body. Trials of homeopathy as a whole have not beaten dummy pills. What forms does Arsenicum sulphuratum rubrum come in? Sugar pellets are the most common form. You let them melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are also sold, and so are small tablets. Strengths are marked with a number and a letter, such as 6C, 30C or 200C. The higher the number, the more times it was watered down. 30C is the usual shop strength. You may also see 3X or 6X. These are watered down far fewer times. Do not buy these, and never buy raw realgar powder. Where it comes from: Realgar is an old and well known mineral. People used it as a red paint and as a poison for rats and insects. Healers in China used it in tiny amounts, and it appears in old Indian texts as well. Those uses belong to the raw rock, not to the watered-down remedy. Homeopaths took it up in the 1800s. They gave it to healthy people, wrote down what those people felt, and built the remedy picture from those notes. It stayed a minor remedy, used far less than its better known cousin Arsenicum album.

Helps

What does Arsenicum sulphuratum rubrum help with? Itchy, scaly skin and eczema: This is the main use in homeopathic texts. The old notes describe dry, itchy patches that feel worse from warmth and washing. No human trial has tested this remedy for skin problems, so there is nothing to weigh beyond the tradition. Hay fever and a running, burning nose: Homeopaths pick it when the nose runs, burns and feels raw, with sneezing fits. This use comes from 19th century notes taken on healthy people. No trial has tested it, and hay fever eases on its own as the season turns. Headache across the forehead: The texts describe a dull ache over the brow, often with a blocked or burning nose. That is a tradition-based match, not a tested one. A headache that is new, very bad, or keeps coming back needs a doctor, not a pellet. Low mood and restless worry: Some old notes list sadness, fear and a restless mind. There is no trial evidence at all for this use. Low mood that lasts more than two weeks should be checked by a doctor. Aching joints and muscles: Homeopaths sometimes use it for aching limbs that feel worse in damp weather. This rests on remedy notes alone. No human study has looked at it for joint or muscle pain.

Where it comes from:

Realgar is an old and well known mineral.

Who should avoid Arsenicum sulphuratum rubrum?

  • Do not use if you are offered 3X, 6X or any low potency (a dilution watered down only a few times), or raw realgar powder — these can hold real arsenic, which is a poison
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless a doctor who knows your case says it is fine
  • Do not use if you want to give it to a baby or young child without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you are taking arsenic trioxide (a cancer medicine), because you would be adding arsenic to arsenic
  • Do not use if you have a heart rhythm problem and are thinking of a low potency, as arsenic can upset the heartbeat
  • Do not use if you have kidney or liver disease and are thinking of a low potency, since your body clears arsenic more slowly
  • Do not use if you would be swapping it for treatment your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you have a serious or fast-worsening problem, such as chest pain, trouble breathing, or a spreading skin infection — get medical care instead

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your symptoms get worse, or if nothing has changed after about a week.

Go to an emergency department straight away if you have vomiting, bad belly pain, watery stools, or numb and tingling hands after taking a low potency or raw realgar. These can be signs of arsenic poisoning. Take the packet with you.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain, or a rash that spreads fast.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
