Wide awake at 3am every night
You drop off fine at bedtime. Then your eyes open in the small hours, near the same time each night. The room is dark, the clock glows, and your head starts running.
Waking in the night is normal. Most people stir a few times without knowing it. The problem is when you come fully awake and cannot drift back off.
Many things can wake you at that hour. Stress hormones rise before dawn, and a busy mind takes over. Alcohol, a late heavy meal, a full bladder, heat, noise, pain, hot flushes, or breathing trouble can all play a part.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you snore loudly and gasp or stop breathing while asleep. Book a visit too if you wake short of breath, with chest pain, or soaked in sweat most nights. Low mood, waking hours too early each day, or being so tired that driving feels unsafe also need a check.
Below are traditional and home remedies linked to insomnia. Each one carries a grade that shows how strong the evidence is, not a promise of results. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first, above all if you take other medicines.
