Can't fall asleep for hours
You go to bed tired. Then you lie there, wide awake, for an hour or more. Your body is still, but your mind will not stop.
This is called trouble falling asleep. The wait to drift off can run past an hour. Stress, worry, and a racing mind are common causes.
Late coffee, tea, or screen time can keep you alert. Naps and shifting bedtimes can move your body clock. Pain, itching, a blocked nose, or some medicines can hold sleep off.
When to see someone
See your doctor if this lasts most nights for a month or more. Get care right away for chest pain, a racing heart, or thoughts of harming yourself. Also call if you snore and gasp at night, feel very low, or your legs crawl.
Below you will find remedies people use when sleep is slow to come. Each one carries a grade that shows how strong the evidence behind it is. A high grade means more study; a low grade means little proof so far.
