Stomach cramps after drinking milk
You drink a glass of milk. An hour or two later, your belly starts to cramp. You may also feel bloated, gassy, or need the toilet in a hurry.
For many people, the cause is lactose. Lactose is the sugar in milk. Your gut needs a helper called lactase to break that sugar down.
Some people make less lactase as they get older. This is common, and it often runs in families. A stomach bug can also lower it for a few weeks.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you lose weight without trying, see blood in your stool, or run a fever. Cramps that wake you at night, or that come even when you skip milk, need a check too. If your lips or throat swell, you wheeze, or you break out in hives after milk, get urgent care.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies linked to lactose trouble. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research has looked at it. A high grade means more study, not a promise, so talk to your doctor first.
