Loud gurgling gas after ice cream
You finish a bowl of ice cream. An hour or two later, your belly starts to rumble. The noise can be loud enough for other people to hear.
Milk sugar is called lactose. Your gut uses a tool called lactase to break it down. If you make very little lactase, that sugar moves on into your lower gut.
The bugs that live down there feed on it. They give off gas as they go. That gas is what you hear and feel, along with bloating and wind.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you lose weight without trying, or if you see blood in your stool. Fever, hard belly pain, or loose stools that last more than a few days also need a check. Get seen too if this gas is new and your bowel habits have changed.
