Stiff knees in the morning
You swing your legs out of bed and your knees feel stuck. The first few steps are slow and sore. After ten or twenty minutes of moving, they often loosen up.
This is called morning stiffness. It often comes from wear in the smooth padding that lines a knee joint. Doctors call that wear osteoarthritis.
Age, an old knee injury, extra body weight, and long hours on your feet can all play a part. Cold days or a hard day's work can make the next morning worse.
When to see someone
See a doctor if a knee is hot, red, or puffy, or if you run a fever. Get help right away if the knee locks, gives way, or you cannot put weight on it. Also get checked if the stiffness lasts more than an hour each morning, or if many joints feel stiff at once.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies people use for this. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research stands behind it, not a promise of results. Talk with your doctor before you try any of them, and keep taking any medicine you were given.
