Shoulder throbs all night in bed
All day your shoulder was quiet, or just a bit sore. Then you lie down and it starts to throb. You roll one way, then the other, and no spot feels right.
This is a common pattern with a rotator cuff injury. The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their cords that hold the shoulder in place. When one of them is torn or swollen, lying flat can press right on the sore spot.
Night pain has other reasons too. Your body moves less in bed, so fluid and swelling settle around the joint. Sleeping on that side, or with your arm tucked up under the pillow, adds more load.
When to see someone
Book a visit if this wakes you most nights for more than two weeks, or if your arm feels weak, numb, or tingly. Get seen quickly if the pain began after a fall, if the shoulder looks out of shape, or if it locks and will not move. Seek urgent care for fever, hot red skin over the joint, or chest pain and trouble breathing.
Below is a list of home and natural remedies that people use for rotator cuff trouble. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research stands behind it, not a promise about your shoulder. Some grades are low, so talk with your doctor before you try something new, above all if you take other medicine.
