Sharp pain shooting down my leg
The pain often starts in your low back or hip. Then it shoots down the back of your leg. Some people feel it past the knee, into the calf or foot.
It can burn, sting, or feel like a jolt of power. Bending, coughing, or sitting a long time may set it off. Your leg may also feel numb, weak, or full of pins and needles.
One common cause is a disc in your spine that bulges out. The soft pad between two bones can press on a nerve. That nerve runs to your leg, so the pain shows up far from your back.
When to see someone
Get care the same day for numb skin around your groin or back passage, or trouble peeing. Leaking pee or stool is also urgent, as is a leg that grows weak fast. Call your doctor if the pain came from a fall, comes with fever or weight loss, or lasts more than six weeks.
The list below shows remedies people have used for a bulging disc. Each one carries a grade for how strong the research behind it is. A low grade means the proof is thin, so talk with your doctor before you try it.
