Leg keeps giving out when walking
You are walking along, and your leg just quits for a second. The knee buckles, or your foot drops and catches on the floor. Some people say the leg feels heavy, or not quite their own.
A disc in your low back can press on a nerve root. That nerve carries the signal to the muscles in your leg. When the signal is weak, the muscle lets go for a moment.
The weak spot depends on which nerve is pinched. It may show up as a buckling knee, a weak hip, or a foot that slaps down. Back pain or leg pain often comes with it, but not always.
When to see someone
Get seen the same day if you cannot lift your foot or stand on that leg. Go to an emergency room if you lose feeling around your groin or buttocks, or you cannot control your bladder or bowels. Call your doctor soon if you have fallen, if both legs feel weak, or if you also have a fever or losing weight you cannot explain.
Below is a list of traditional and home remedies people have used for a herniated disc. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research has looked at it, not a promise about your leg. Read the grade first, and check with your doctor before you start anything new.
