Perfumes and smells make me feel sick
You walk past someone wearing perfume. Your throat tightens and your head starts to pound. Within minutes you feel sick to your stomach.
Strong smells can set this off in some people. Cleaning sprays, scented candles, new paint and car fumes are common ones. The reaction can come fast, then take hours to fade.
Mast cells are immune cells in your nose, skin and gut. In some people they fire off too easily. Smells are one trigger; heat, stress and some foods are others.
When to see someone
Get emergency help if your lips, tongue or throat swell. Do the same for wheezing, a tight chest, fainting or a racing heart. See your doctor if this happens often, makes you vomit, or keeps you from work.
Below are remedies drawn from our reviewed list for mast cell activation. Each has a grade for the strength of the evidence, not a promise about you. Show your doctor or pharmacist any you are thinking about, since some clash with drugs.
