Mouth so dry I can't swallow
Your mouth feels sticky, and your tongue seems to stick to the roof of it. Food stalls in your throat and will not go down. You may need a sip of water with every bite.
Spit keeps the mouth wet and helps food slide down. When your body runs short of water, it makes less spit. Heat, hard work, a fever, throwing up, or simply not drinking enough can all play a part.
Other things dry the mouth too. Many drugs list dry mouth as a side effect. Breathing through your mouth all night can leave you parched by dawn.
When to see someone
Get help right away if you cannot swallow your own spit, or if you choke or gasp. Call a doctor if you feel dizzy, weak, or confused. A dry mouth that drags on for weeks needs a check too.
Below are traditional remedies people have used when the body runs low on fluids. Each one carries a grade for how strong the research behind it is. A high grade means better studies, not a promise about you.
