Knots between my shoulders
You reach back and find a tight, sore lump between your shoulder blades. It may feel like a small ball or a tight rope under the skin. Pressing on it can hurt, and the ache can spread up into your neck.
These tight spots are often called trigger points. Muscle fibres that hold one position for hours can stay switched on. A heavy bag, cold air, worry, or sleeping on one side can add to it.
Sometimes the knot is not the whole story. Pain between the shoulder blades can also start in the neck joints, a disc, or a rib joint. Shallow breathing when you are tense can play a part too.
When to see someone
See a doctor the same day if the pain comes with chest tightness, sweating, or trouble breathing. Book a visit if you have numbness, tingling, or weakness in an arm or hand. Also get checked for fever, night sweats, weight loss, a lump that grows, or pain that wakes you most nights.
Below is a list of traditional remedies linked to neck and shoulder pain. Each one carries a grade for how much research exists behind it. The grade rates the evidence only, not what will happen for you.
