Itchy, bumpy rash on elbows
You rub your elbow and feel small raised bumps. The skin may look red or pink. It can itch, sting or burn, and scratching often makes it worse.
Many things cause a rash here. Dry skin, eczema and psoriasis are common. Soaps, new laundry soap, or a rough sleeve can also set the skin off.
One cause is tied to gluten, a protein in wheat, barley and rye. In some people, the rash shows up on both elbows, and often on knees, scalp or buttocks. Tiny blisters may come and go in the same spots.
When to see someone
See a doctor if the rash weeps, oozes pus, or spreads fast. Get care right away for fever, chills, or skin that is hot and swollen. Ask before you drop gluten from your meals, since blood tests and biopsies work best while you still eat it.
Below is a list of remedies people use for gluten sensitivity. Each one carries a grade for how strong the research behind it is. A low grade means the proof is thin, so read the list as a place to start and talk it over with your doctor.
