Brain fog and tired after eating
You finish a meal and your head turns cloudy. Words come slowly, and you lose your thread mid-sentence. Some days you just want to lie down.
A small dip after a big meal is normal. But this can show up after most meals, even light ones. The fog may lift in an hour, or hang around all day.
Many things can bring it on. Blood sugar swings, broken sleep, low iron and thyroid trouble are common ones. Some people notice it most after wheat, rye or barley, the grains that hold gluten.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you are losing weight without trying, if your stools look pale and greasy, or if you feel faint and your heart races. Ask for a coeliac blood test before you drop gluten, since cutting it out early can hide the result. Sudden confusion, slurred speech or a drooping face needs emergency help right away.
Below is a list of remedies people have long used when food leaves them foggy and flat. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research stands behind it. A grade is not a promise of results, so read it first and talk with your doctor before you try anything new.
