Heart pounding when I overheat
A wave of heat rises up your chest and face. Your skin feels flushed and damp. Then your heart starts to pound, fast and hard, and you notice every beat.
This pattern often comes with hot flashes. The body's heat switch grows touchy around menopause. When it trips, blood rushes to the skin and the heart speeds up to keep pace.
Warm rooms, hot drinks, spicy food, alcohol and stress can set one off. The pounding often fades in a minute or two. It can feel alarming, even when it passes on its own.
When to see someone
Get help right away if chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting come with the pounding. Call your doctor if your heart races while you rest, skips beats, or pounds for more than a few minutes. Also get checked for weight loss, shaky hands, a lump in your neck, or heat spells that began before age 40.
Below is a list of traditional and home remedies people have used during hot flashes. Each one carries a grade that shows how much solid research exists for it. A high grade is not a promise, and a low grade means the evidence is thin, so talk with your doctor first.
