Constant ringing in my ears
You hear a ring, hiss or buzz that does not stop. It may sit in the background all day. In a quiet room, or at night, it can seem much louder.
This sound comes from inside your hearing system, not from the room. Loud noise over the years is one common reason. Ear wax, some drugs, ear infections, and hearing loss that comes with age can also play a part.
Stress and poor sleep do not create the sound. But they can make you notice it more. Many people say it rises and falls from week to week.
The noise is real, even when no one else can hear it. It is worth having someone look into the cause.
When to see someone
See a doctor if the sound is in one ear only, or if it beats like your pulse. Get care the same day for sudden hearing loss, spinning dizziness, ear pain, or fluid from the ear. Book a visit if it starts after a head knock or a new drug, or if it wears down your mood or sleep.
Below is a list of remedies people have long used for tinnitus, the medical word for ear ringing. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research has looked at it. A grade is not a promise, so read it first and talk with your doctor before you try anything new.
