Can't stop checking the stove
You turned the stove off. You know you did. But you go back to look again, and maybe again after that.
This is a checking loop. A scary thought shows up: what if the house burns down? Checking calms it for a moment, then the doubt creeps back.
Doctors often link this pattern to OCD, short for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Stress, poor sleep, or a big life change can make it louder. It does not mean you are careless or losing your mind.
When to see someone
See a doctor if checking eats up an hour or more of your day. Book a visit if you are late for work, avoid cooking, or ask other people to check for you. Get help right away if you feel hopeless or have thoughts of harming yourself.
Below is a list of remedies people use for OCD. Each one carries a grade that shows how strong the research behind it is. A grade is not a promise, so read it with care and talk to your doctor first.
