Can't bend to tie my shoes
You reach for your laces and your back locks up. The bend is the hard part, not the tying. Many people drop to a knee or prop a foot on a chair instead.
Bending forward loads the discs and joints in your low back. When that area is sore, nearby muscles tighten up. That tight hold limits how far you can fold over.
Long-term low back pain has many causes. Worn discs, stiff hips, weak belly muscles and old strains all play a part. Mornings can be worse, since you stiffen up while you sleep.
When to see someone
See a doctor if your leg feels numb or weak, or your foot drags. Get help right away if you lose bladder or bowel control. Also call about back pain after a fall, fever, or weight loss you did not plan.
Below is a list of remedies from our long-term low back pain file. Each has a grade for how much research exists, not a promise of results. Check the grade, then ask your doctor before trying one.
