Back stiff for hours after waking
You wake up and your lower back feels locked. It can take an hour or more to loosen. Some mornings the stiff feeling hangs on half the day.
Stiffness that fades in a few minutes is common. Stiffness that drags on for hours is a different pattern. It often eases once you move about, and comes back when you sit still.
There are many reasons for this. A soft bed, an odd sleep position, or an old strain can play a part. Long morning stiffness with back pain can also point to swelling in the spine joints, as in ankylosing spondylitis.
When to see someone
See a doctor if this has lasted three months or more. Go sooner with fever, weight loss you cannot explain, numb legs, or trouble passing urine. Sore red eyes or loose, bloody stools also need a check.
Below you will find remedies people try for morning back stiffness, each with an evidence grade. A high grade means more research behind it, not a promise. Show your doctor any you plan to try.
