Back feels stiff and locked every morning
You wake up and your back will not move the way you want. Rolling out of bed takes planning. The first few steps are slow and careful.
Stiffness like this is common when the discs in your spine wear down with age. Discs are the soft pads between the bones of your back. While you lie still for hours, they take in fluid and swell a little.
The small joints and muscles around them also tighten up after a long rest. Your sleep position or an old mattress can add to it. Stiffness that lasts more than an hour, or that starts before age 40, can point to a different cause.
When to see someone
Call your doctor if the stiffness lasts over an hour each morning, or if you also have fever, night sweats or weight loss you cannot explain. Get help right away if you lose control of your bladder or bowel, or feel numb between your legs. Book a visit soon for leg weakness, or back pain that began after a fall.
Below are remedies people have long used for worn spinal discs, each with an evidence grade. The grade tells you how strong the research is, not what the remedy will do for you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you try anything new.
