What is Tu Si Zi (Dodder Seed)? Tu Si Zi (Cuscuta chinensis or Cuscuta australis) is a parasitic flowering vine whose tiny seeds have been a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine for more than two millennia. It is classified as a kidney and liver tonic — one of the few herbs in classical TCM that simultaneously tonifies both yin and yang without being considered too warming or drying. The seeds are harvested in autumn, processed, and used in dozens of classical formulas for reproductive health, musculoskeletal strength, and sensory organ support. How does Tu Si Zi (Dodder Seed) work? Tu Si Zi works through several pathways that support hormonal balance and tissue protection. Its flavonoids — especially quercetin, kaempferol, and hyperoside — act as antioxidants and appear to support testosterone production and sperm quality. Its polysaccharides support immune regulation and may help protect bone-forming cells from breakdown. The seed also contains compounds that support liver function and estrogen metabolism, which is why it appears in formulas targeting both male and female reproductive concerns. What forms does Tu Si Zi (Dodder Seed) come in? The most traditional form is a decoction (boiled in water), though modern users most commonly take standardized capsules or powdered extracts. Patent pill formulas like Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan (Five Seed Fertility Formula) combine Tu Si Zi with other reproductive tonics. Tinctures are available but less common. For bone and fertility applications, standardized extracts are preferred for consistent dosing. Where it comes from: Tu Si Zi appears in the Shennong Bencao Jing — China's oldest herbal classic, compiled around 200 CE — where it was listed as a superior herb for nourishing essence and extending life. It has been continuously used for over 2,000 years in TCM formulas targeting sexual vitality, fertility, and age-related decline in kidney energy. Its use spread to Korean, Japanese (Kampo), and Vietnamese traditional medicine systems, where it occupies a similarly prominent role.

Helps

What does Tu Si Zi (Dodder Seed) help with? Male fertility and sperm health: Tu Si Zi is one of the most used herbs in TCM for male reproductive support. Its flavonoids appear to protect sperm from oxidative damage and support healthy sperm count, motility, and morphology. Clinical studies in men with poor sperm parameters have shown improvements after several weeks of use, particularly when taken as part of a combination formula. Low testosterone (men): The herb's active compounds appear to support the body's natural testosterone production pathways. Research suggests it may help stimulate the release of hormones that signal the testes to produce testosterone, making it potentially useful for men experiencing age-related hormonal decline or sluggish reproductive function. Bone density and osteoporosis risk: Tu Si Zi's flavonoids — especially kaempferol and quercetin — appear to support bone-forming cells while slowing bone breakdown. Human studies, including in postmenopausal women, have observed improvements in bone mineral density markers with use, supporting its traditional role as a 'bone-strengthening' kidney tonic. Kidney yang deficiency: In TCM, kidney yang deficiency manifests as cold limbs, low libido, fatigue, frequent urination, and low back pain. Tu Si Zi is considered one of the primary herbs to warm and restore kidney yang energy, and has been used in this role for centuries across Chinese, Korean, and Japanese herbal traditions. Eye health and vision decline: Classical TCM linked kidney and liver health to eye function, and Tu Si Zi was regularly prescribed for blurry vision, dry eyes, and light sensitivity associated with aging or overwork. Its antioxidant flavonoids may help protect retinal cells from oxidative damage, supporting its long historical use for vision-related complaints. Female fertility and hormonal balance: Tu Si Zi is used in several classical formulas targeting female reproductive health, including irregular cycles, luteal phase deficiency, and recurrent miscarriage prevention in TCM practice. Some evidence suggests it may support healthy progesterone levels and uterine environment, though human clinical evidence in women is more limited than in men. Fatigue and low energy (kidney qi deficiency): Persistent fatigue, especially the kind that feels like a deep depletion rather than simple tiredness, is a classic kidney qi deficiency pattern in TCM. Tu Si Zi is used to gradually rebuild this foundational energy reserve, and users typically report improved stamina and reduced exhaustion over 4–8 weeks of consistent use. Frequent urination and urinary weakness: Weak bladder control, nocturia (waking at night to urinate), and urinary frequency without infection are classic signs of kidney deficiency in TCM. Tu Si Zi has been used for centuries specifically for these complaints, and its toning effect on kidney function may help reduce urinary urgency and improve bladder control over time.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
