What is Tokakujokito? Tokakujokito is a five-herb Kampo formula derived from the classical Chinese text Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders, c. 200 CE) and widely used in Japan's licensed Kampo medical system today. It combines peach kernel, rhubarb root, cinnamon twig, mirabilite, and licorice root into a formula traditionally prescribed for conditions involving what Kampo practitioners call 'blood stasis' in the lower abdomen — a pattern associated with pain, heat, constipation, and disturbed menstruation. In Japan, this formula is approved by the Ministry of Health as a standardized extract (TJ-61) and is prescribed by licensed physicians within the national health insurance system. How does Tokakujokito work? The formula works through complementary actions of its five herbs: peach kernel and rhubarb improve circulation and help clear congestion in the pelvic region; cinnamon twig warms and moves blood; mirabilite softens the bowel and supports elimination; and licorice harmonizes the formula and protects the digestive system. Together, these herbs support healthy blood flow in the lower abdomen, ease inflammation, and relieve pressure-related pain. Modern research suggests anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant-like, and smooth muscle-relaxing properties across the formula's components. What forms does Tokakujokito come in? In Japan, Tokakujokito is most commonly dispensed as a standardized granule extract (Tsumura TJ-61) that dissolves in warm water, making it easy to take and dose-consistent. Traditional decoction (boiling the raw herbs) is also used by classical practitioners. Tablet forms exist but are less common. Granule extract is generally preferred for clinical use due to standardization and convenience. Where it comes from: This formula was first recorded in the Shang Han Lun, compiled by Zhang Zhongjing in China around 200 CE, making it over 1,800 years old. It was adopted into Japanese Kampo medicine and has been continuously refined and used there ever since. Today it is one of roughly 148 Kampo formulas covered by Japan's national health insurance, reflecting its established clinical role.

Helps

What does Tokakujokito help with? Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea): Tokakujokito is one of the most widely prescribed Kampo formulas for painful periods. It helps relax tension in the pelvic area and supports healthy blood flow, which can reduce cramping and the lower abdominal heaviness many women experience during menstruation. Relief is often noticeable within one to two cycles of consistent use. Irregular periods and PMS: The formula is traditionally used when periods are late, scanty, or accompanied by premenstrual irritability and pelvic discomfort. By promoting better circulation in the lower abdomen and clearing what Kampo medicine calls 'heat in the blood,' it can help normalize cycle rhythm and reduce premenstrual tension over time. Pelvic congestion and pain: Pelvic congestion — a feeling of heaviness, pressure, or aching in the lower abdomen — is a classic indication for this formula in both Kampo and TCM traditions. The combination of peach kernel, rhubarb, and cinnamon twig works together to improve circulation and reduce inflammatory congestion in pelvic tissues. Endometriosis-related pain: Tokakujokito has been studied specifically for endometriosis in Japan, where it is used alongside conventional treatment to reduce pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea. It appears to help by dampening local inflammation and improving tissue circulation in the pelvic cavity. Constipation with abdominal tension: The rhubarb and mirabilite in this formula make it effective for constipation, especially the type associated with abdominal hardness, bloating, or lower abdominal pain. It stimulates bowel movement and softens stool without being overly harsh when taken at therapeutic doses. Headaches linked to blood stagnation: In Kampo, certain headaches — particularly those that are throbbing, worsen with heat, or accompany menstrual cycles — are linked to blood stagnation rising upward. Tokakujokito is thought to redirect congested blood downward and away from the head, offering relief for this pattern. Uterine fibroids (symptom support): While not a cure for fibroids, Tokakujokito is used in Japan to manage fibroid-related symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure, and menstrual pain. It is typically used as part of a broader Kampo management approach alongside gynecological care. Post-injury bruising and swelling: Traditionally used after trauma where blood has pooled under the skin or in soft tissues, this formula helps the body reabsorb bruising and reduce swelling by improving local circulation and reducing clotting-related congestion. Psychiatric symptoms linked to blood stagnation (irritability, agitation): In classical Kampo, 'blood stasis with heat' can manifest not just physically but emotionally — as irritability, restlessness, or even mild manic-like states. Tokakujokito has historically been used for these presentations, and some modern Japanese psychiatric Kampo practitioners continue this application.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
