Theridion curassavicum

A long-standing named remedy in homeopathy alone, with no human trial evidence that it works better than placebo.

What is Theridion curassavicum? Theridion curassavicum is a homeopathic remedy made from the orange spider of Curaçao. It is a single remedy, not a mix. Homeopaths give it most often for dizziness and for being badly upset by noise. The spider is soaked in alcohol, then watered down step by step and shaken. At 30C, the usual strength, that process leaves no spider material behind. What you take is a sugar pellet, or a drop of water and alcohol. Here is the plain verdict on evidence. Trials have not shown that homeopathic remedies beat a dummy pill. Its place rests on long use in one tradition, and long use is not proof that something works. How does Theridion curassavicum work? The honest answer is that no one has shown a way it could work. Homeopathy rests on an old idea: a substance that causes symptoms in a well person can treat the same symptoms in a sick person, once it is watered down far enough. Homeopaths say the water keeps some imprint of the spider after all the dilution and shaking. Chemistry and physics do not support that idea. No test has found such an imprint. At 30C there is nothing of the spider left to act on your body. So any change you notice is most likely placebo, which means feeling better because you expect to. Illnesses such as dizzy spells also come and go on their own, which can look like a remedy working. What forms does Theridion curassavicum come in? Most people meet it as small sugar pellets in a tube. Common labels are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are also sold. Both forms go in the mouth. Pellets are usually let melt under the tongue. Drops are put on the tongue or in a little water. A higher number means more dilution steps, not more power in the everyday sense. Homeopaths treat 200C as a "stronger" choice, but that is their system, not a measured dose. Pick pellets if you avoid alcohol, and drops if you must avoid sugar. Where it comes from: Theridion curassavicum came into homeopathy in the 1830s and 1840s. Constantine Hering, a German doctor who worked in the Caribbean and later in the United States, gave it to healthy volunteers and wrote down what they reported. Homeopaths call that a proving. The notes from that proving are where its reputation comes from: dizziness on closing the eyes, sickness from travel, and pain made worse by noise. Those are reported symptoms, not test results. It has stayed in homeopathic materia medica (the reference books of remedies) ever since. Its use sits inside homeopathy only. It is not part of Caribbean folk medicine, herbal practice or any other healing tradition.

Helps

What does Theridion curassavicum help with? Vertigo (a spinning feeling), especially on closing the eyes: This is the classic reason homeopaths reach for it. The picture in their books is dizziness that gets worse when you shut your eyes, turn over in bed, or ride in a car. No human trial has tested this remedy for vertigo. Sudden or lasting vertigo needs a real diagnosis, because the causes range from harmless inner-ear trouble to stroke. Motion sickness and seasickness: Homeopaths suggest it for people who feel sick and dizzy on boats, planes or winding roads. This use comes straight from Hering's proving notes. There are no published human trials of this remedy for travel sickness. Ordinary travel-sickness medicines have been tested and do work for many people, so ask a pharmacist before a trip. Strong sensitivity to noise: Homeopathic books describe a person who feels every sound go right through them, and whose teeth or head hurt at any noise. That symptom picture is the main thing that points a homeopath to this remedy. No trial evidence supports it. New or severe sound sensitivity can follow head injury, migraine or ear disease and should be checked. Nervous headache with nausea: It is offered for headache that comes with sickness of the stomach and that worsens with noise or movement. Tradition here is a set of case notes, not measured results. No human study has tested it for headache. If headaches are new, frequent or severe, get them looked at rather than treated at home. Nausea from travel or from movement: The remedy is used for queasiness brought on by motion, often together with dizziness. This overlaps with the travel-sickness use and rests on the same proving notes. No trials exist for it. Nausea that keeps you from eating or drinking for more than a day needs medical advice.

Where it comes from:

Theridion curassavicum came into homeopathy in the 1830s and 1840s. Constantine Hering, a German doctor who worked in the Caribbean and later in the United States, gave it to healthy volunteers and wrote down what they reported. Homeopaths call that a proving.

It has stayed in homeopathic materia medica (the reference books of remedies) ever since. Its use sits inside homeopathy only. It is not part of Caribbean folk medicine, herbal practice or any other healing tradition.

Who should avoid Theridion curassavicum?

  • Do not use if you have sudden severe dizziness, slurred speech, weakness on one side, double vision, chest pain or a recent head injury — these need emergency care, not a remedy
  • Do not use if you would delay, reduce or stop a prescribed medicine in order to try it
  • Do not use if you are offered a mother tincture (the first alcohol extract of the spider) or a very low strength such as 3X, as these can still contain spider material
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife has said it is fine
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby under one year old without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you are allergic to lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are lactose-based — ask for a sucrose (cane sugar) version
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you must avoid alcohol, such as in recovery from alcohol use, in liver disease, or while taking metronidazole or disulfiram
  • Do not use if you have had an allergic reaction to this remedy or to spider material before

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor rather than treating yourself if dizziness is severe, keeps coming back, or lasts more than a few days. Get urgent help the same day for dizziness with a bad headache, hearing loss, ringing in one ear, fainting, or a fast or uneven heartbeat.

Call emergency services for dizziness or headache with slurred speech, a drooping face, weakness or numbness on one side, confusion, double vision, or a sudden headache that hits like a blow. These can be signs of a stroke.

Also see a doctor if you cannot keep fluids down for more than a day, if headaches are new and getting worse, or if your symptoms do not improve after about three days of trying this remedy.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
