What is Tarentula cubensis? Tarentula cubensis is a single homeopathic remedy, not a herbal blend or a mix of drugs. It is made from the Cuban tarantula, a large spider. Its Latin names are Mygale and Tarentula cubensis. Homeopaths pick it for hot, angry boils and abscesses (pockets of pus). The pain picture they match is burning and stinging, with dark red or purple skin. The remedy is serially diluted. That means the spider material is watered down again and again, with a shake at each step. At the usual 30C strength, no spider material is left in the pill. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a thing works. Trials do not show this remedy beating a placebo (a dummy pill). Do not use it in place of real care for an infection. How does Tarentula cubensis work? Homeopathy rests on one idea. A thing that causes symptoms in a well person is said to treat like symptoms when it is diluted. A tarantula bite can cause hot, burning, purple swelling, so the remedy is matched to that picture. There is no known way for a 30C pill to act on the body. No molecules of the spider are left in it. So normal chemistry cannot explain an effect. Some people do feel better after taking it. The best explanations are placebo, illness that fades on its own, and the time and care a practitioner gives. What forms does Tarentula cubensis come in? It comes as small sugar pellets, as tablets, and as liquid drops in alcohol. Labels show a strength such as 6C, 30C or 200C. A higher number means more dilution, not more power in any chemical sense. Some shops also sell 3X or 6X forms, which are less diluted. Vets in some countries use an injectable form for animals. Human products are sold over the counter in many places. Where it comes from: Homeopaths in Cuba and the United States brought the spider into use in the 1800s. They tested it on healthy people, a step homeopathy calls a proving, and wrote down the symptoms reported. From that, it became a small, niche remedy for hot boils, felons (infections at the fingertip) and dark, painful swellings. It never became a first-line homeopathic remedy. It is also known simply as the Cuban tarantula remedy.

Helps

What does Tarentula cubensis help with? Boils and abscesses (pockets of pus under the skin): This is the classic use in homeopathic books. The picture is a hot, purple, throbbing lump with burning pain that feels worse at night. No human trial has tested the remedy for boils. A boil that grows, throbs hard or comes with fever needs a doctor, who may drain it or give antibiotics. Felon or whitlow (an infection at the fingertip): Homeopaths use it for a fingertip that is swollen, dark and burning hot. This use comes from old case notes, not from trials. A felon can damage the bone and tendon in the finger, so get it seen quickly. Carbuncle (a cluster of joined boils): Old texts name it for carbuncles with severe burning pain. There is no human trial evidence. Carbuncles often need medical treatment, and people with diabetes (high blood sugar) are at higher risk from them. Burning, stinging pain in a swollen area: The remedy is chosen by the type of pain, not by the diagnosis. That matching is a rule of the tradition, not a tested finding. Pain relief has not been shown in any published human trial of this remedy. Slow-healing or dark, angry wounds: Some animal and laboratory reports look at wound healing with this remedy, mostly in vets' work. Animal work does not show that it helps people. A wound turning black or numb is an emergency. Mastitis (a painful, inflamed breast): It appears in homeopathic and veterinary writing for hot, hard, very painful breast or udder inflammation. There is no human trial support. Mastitis with fever usually needs a doctor and may need antibiotics.

Where it comes from:

Homeopaths in Cuba and the United States brought the spider into use in the 1800s.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Tarentula cubensis need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Tarentula cubensis?

  • Do not use this remedy in place of antibiotics if you have a spreading skin infection.
  • Do not use it to treat a boil, wound or swelling that comes with fever, chills or red streaks in the skin — get medical care the same day.
  • Do not use it on a wound that is turning black, numb or smells bad; go to hospital instead.
  • Do not use it as your only treatment if you have diabetes (high blood sugar), as skin infections can turn serious fast.
  • Do not use it as your only treatment if your immune system is weak, for example during cancer treatment or after a transplant.
  • Do not use the alcohol-based drops if you take disulfiram or metronidazole, or if you avoid alcohol.
  • Do not give the alcohol-based drops to a baby or young child.
  • Do not use products that contain lactose (milk sugar) if lactose makes you ill.
  • Do not start it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding without asking your doctor or midwife first, as safety has not been studied.
  • Do not buy very low strengths such as 3X if you want a product with no source material left, as traces may remain.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if a boil or wound grows quickly, throbs badly, or oozes a lot of pus. Go straight to urgent care if you get a fever, chills, or red streaks spreading from the sore spot.

Get emergency help if the skin turns black or numb, if you feel confused, very weak or short of breath, or if your heart is racing. These can be signs of sepsis (blood poisoning), which needs hospital treatment fast.

Also speak to a doctor if pain is no better in 48 hours, or if you are unsure whether a lump needs draining.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
