What is Serum anguillae? Serum anguillae is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from the blood serum of the eel. Serum is the clear liquid part of blood. It is a single drug in homeopathy. The Latin name is Anguilla anguilla (blood serum). Many people know it as eel serum. Homeopaths have used it for kidney trouble and for a build-up of water in the body. It was also used for swollen legs and for low urine output. These uses come from old practice, and old practice is not proof that something works. The remedy is diluted over and over again. At 30C no eel serum is left at all. Trials do not show it doing more than a dummy pill (placebo). How does Serum anguillae work? There is no known way this remedy could act on the body. That is the honest answer, and it comes first. Homeopathy rests on an idea called 'like cures like'. Raw eel blood harms red blood cells and the kidneys. So homeopaths give a tiny, diluted dose for kidney and water problems. The maker mixes one part eel serum with 99 parts liquid. Then they shake the mix hard. This shaking step is called succussion. The step is then repeated many times. A 30C remedy has been through 30 such steps. By that point no eel serum remains in the bottle. What you swallow is sugar, or water and alcohol. Homeopaths say the liquid keeps a 'memory' of the eel serum. Chemists and doctors have found no sign of such a memory. When these remedies are tested against a dummy pill, they match it. So any change you feel is likely due to time, care, or your own hopes. What forms does Serum anguillae come in? You will mostly find it as small sugar pills. They melt under the tongue. Other common forms are: Sugar pellets in a tube, often 6C, 30C or 200C. Liquid drops in water and alcohol. Larger tablets that dissolve in the mouth. It is a rare remedy. Most shops do not stock it, so it is often ordered from a homeopathic pharmacy. There is no injection form for home use. Raw eel serum is not sold as a supplement, and it should never be taken raw. Where it comes from: Eel serum came into homeopathy from French lab work, not from folk medicine. Around 1900, French scientists showed that eel blood was toxic. It damaged red blood cells and harmed the kidneys in animals. French homeopaths then turned it into a remedy. They gave it for kidney trouble and for water held in the body. This followed the 'like cures like' rule. It has stayed a small, rarely used remedy. It sits in some homeopathic reference books. You will not find it in most home kits. So its traditional standing is real but narrow. It belongs to one tradition, and only to a small corner of it.

Helps

What does Serum anguillae help with? Kidney inflammation (nephritis): This is the classic use in homeopathic books. It was chosen because raw eel serum harms the kidneys. No human trial has tested the remedy for kidney disease. Kidney inflammation needs a doctor and real tests, such as blood and urine checks. Water held in the body (oedema): Homeopaths used it when fluid gathered in the legs or belly. There is no trial evidence for this. Fluid build-up can be a sign of heart, kidney or liver trouble, so it needs a proper check. Swollen ankles and legs: Old texts describe puffy, heavy legs as a guiding sign for this remedy. That is a traditional picture, not a tested result. New or one-sided swelling can mean a blood clot and needs same-day care. Low urine output: Books list scanty, dark urine as a key sign. No study has looked at whether the remedy changes urine output in people. Passing very little urine can be a sign the kidneys are failing. High blood pressure (hypertension): Some homeopathic sources link this remedy to raised blood pressure with kidney strain. There is no human trial support. High blood pressure is silent and needs measuring and proven treatment. Shortness of breath linked to heart strain: A few texts mention breathlessness with swelling. This is traditional guidance only. Breathlessness is a warning sign and should be checked by a doctor, not self-treated.

Other common forms are:

Sugar pellets in a tube, often 6C, 30C or 200C.

Where it comes from:

Eel serum came into homeopathy from French lab work, not from folk medicine.

Who should avoid Serum anguillae?

  • Do not use if you are thinking of taking raw or undiluted eel serum, because raw eel blood is poisonous and can cause haemolysis (the breaking open of red blood cells)
  • Do not use if you are allergic to fish or seafood and the product is a low potency such as 3X or 6X, as traces of eel protein may remain and could trigger anaphylaxis (a severe, whole-body allergic reaction)
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease and would take it instead of your prescribed treatment or dialysis (a machine treatment that filters the blood)
  • Do not use if you have heart failure (a weak heart pump) and would stop or lower your water pills or heart medicines to try it
  • Do not use if you have sudden swelling, breathlessness or have stopped passing urine, as these need urgent medical care and not a remedy
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife says it is fine
  • Do not use if you want to give it to a baby or young child without a doctor checking the child first
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole and the product is alcohol-based drops, because the alcohol can make you flush and feel very sick

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if your legs, ankles or belly swell up quickly. Also get checked if you pass much less urine than usual, or if your urine turns dark, red or foamy.

Call emergency services if you cannot catch your breath, if you have chest pain, or if you cannot lie flat without gasping.

Get urgent help for signs of a severe allergy: a swollen face, lips or tongue, a spreading rash, or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Book a routine appointment if you have used this remedy for four weeks and nothing has improved. Bring the tube or bottle with you.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
