What is Seishin-renshi-in? Seishin-renshi-in is a classical ten-herb Kampo formula with roots in Song Dynasty Chinese medicine (Qingxin lianzi yin), later adopted and refined within the Japanese Kampo tradition. It combines calming herbs like lotus seed and coptis with tonifying herbs such as ginseng and astragalus, creating a dual-action formula that soothes irritation while rebuilding underlying vitality. In Japan it is most widely used for chronic kidney disease, urinary tract complaints, and the kind of low-grade fatigue tied to ongoing physical or mental stress. How does Seishin-renshi-in work? The formula works on several overlapping fronts: anti-inflammatory herbs like coptis and rehmannia help quiet irritation in the urinary tract and kidneys, while adaptogens like ginseng and astragalus support energy production and immune balance. Lotus seed and ophiopogon contribute calming, moisture-preserving effects that classical practitioners describe as 'clearing heat and calming the spirit.' Together these herbs may also help protect kidney cells from oxidative stress and support healthy fluid balance. What forms does Seishin-renshi-in come in? In Japan, Seishin-renshi-in is most commonly dispensed as a standardized hot-water extract granule (notably Tsumura's TJ-111), which dissolves in warm water and is taken two to three times daily. Traditional practitioners may prepare it as a boiled decoction using raw herbs. Granule form is preferred in clinical research for consistency of dosing. Where it comes from: The formula originated as Qingxin lianzi yin in the Chinese medical text 'Renzhai Zhizhi Fang' (circa 13th century CE, Song Dynasty), where it was prescribed for fatigue, restlessness, and cloudy urine. It entered the Japanese Kampo canon and became part of the standardized national health insurance formulary, a mark of clinical recognition that relatively few Kampo formulas achieve. Its use has been documented continuously for over 700 years across East Asia.

Helps

What does Seishin-renshi-in help with? Chronic urinary discomfort and urgency: This formula has the longest clinical track record for soothing the urinary tract — reducing urgency, frequency, and that nagging discomfort that lingers even without active infection. Its combination of anti-inflammatory and calming herbs helps settle an overactive or irritated bladder lining. Chronic kidney disease (early to moderate stages): Seishin-renshi-in is one of the most researched Kampo formulas for kidney support. It appears to slow the progression of kidney damage by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in kidney tissue, and several Japanese clinical trials have looked at it specifically for this purpose. Diabetic kidney stress: For people with diabetes-related kidney strain, this formula may help reduce protein leaking into the urine (proteinuria), which is an early sign of kidney damage. The combination of berberine-containing coptis and kidney-protective astragalus is thought to contribute here. Overactive bladder: Beyond just reducing irritation, the formula may help calm the nerve signals that trigger sudden urges to urinate. This makes it useful for functional overactive bladder where there is no underlying infection. Anxiety-related fatigue and mental restlessness: Lotus seed and ophiopogon are traditionally used to settle a racing, restless mind tied to exhaustion. People who feel simultaneously wired and tired — especially from chronic illness or stress — are the classic candidates for this formula in Kampo practice. Proteinuria (protein in urine): Reducing proteinuria is one of the formula's most clinically documented effects. Lower protein in urine signals that the kidney's filtering barrier is under less stress — a meaningful marker of kidney health improvement. Recurrent urinary tract irritation: For those who experience repeated bouts of urinary discomfort without clear bacterial cause, this formula's anti-inflammatory and tissue-soothing properties may break the cycle and help the urinary lining recover more robustly. Low energy and general tiredness from chronic illness: The ginseng and astragalus in this formula are two of the most evidence-backed herbs for rebuilding energy and immune resilience in people worn down by long-term illness. The formula is specifically suited when fatigue comes alongside urinary or kidney complaints.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
