Salix nigra

Recognised but minor homeopathic remedy; no human trials support it, and 30C dilutions do not differ from placebo.

Home

What is Salix nigra? Salix nigra is a homeopathic remedy made from the bark of the black willow tree. Homeopaths have given it for strong sexual urges, semen release during sleep, and pain in the ovaries or periods. It is a single remedy, so it is made from one source only. The bark is first soaked in alcohol to make a strong liquid. That liquid is then watered down again and again, step by step. At 30C, so little bark is left that, in practice, none of it remains. Trials do not show that the diluted remedy works better than a placebo (a dummy pill with no drug in it). Long use in homeopathy is not proof of effect, and we report the two things apart. The mother tincture, which is the strong undiluted liquid, is different: it still holds real willow bark chemicals and can affect the body. How does Salix nigra work? There is no known way that a 30C dilution could act on the body, because almost no source material is left in it. Homeopathy explains the remedy in its own terms, not in terms of chemistry. The idea behind it is "like cures like". A substance that could cause a symptom in a well person is diluted and shaken, then given for that same symptom. This idea has not been shown to work in trials. The mother tincture is a separate case. Willow bark holds salicin, which the body turns into a chemical much like aspirin. That is why the strong liquid can thin the blood and upset the stomach. What forms does Salix nigra come in? You will most often see these forms: - Sugar pellets or pills, sold as 6C, 12C, 30C or 200C - Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base - Mother tincture, the strong undiluted bark extract - Low dilutions such as 1X, 2X or 3X, which still hold bark chemicals The number and letter tell you how many times the liquid was watered down. A higher number means more dilution, not more strength in the normal sense. Where it comes from: Black willow bark has a long folk record for pain and fever, shared by many cultures. Aspirin was later built on the same family of plant chemicals. As a homeopathic remedy, Salix nigra came in through American homeopathy in the late 1800s. Writers of that time listed it for sexual overexcitement and for ovary pain. It stayed a minor remedy rather than a first-choice one.

Helps

What does Salix nigra help with? Strong or constant sexual urges: This is the best known use in old homeopathic texts. There is no trial evidence that the remedy changes sexual urges. If urges feel out of control or cause you distress, that is worth talking through with a doctor or counsellor. Semen release during sleep (wet dreams): Old homeopathic books list Salix nigra for this. Wet dreams are normal and need no treatment in most people. No human trials have tested the remedy for it. Ovary pain and painful periods: Homeopaths have used it for aching or tender ovaries and for painful periods. No trials support this use. New, bad or one-sided pelvic pain needs a doctor, since it can point to an infection or a cyst. Mild aches and fever (willow bark tradition only): Willow bark as a herb, not the diluted remedy, has some human research for low back pain and joint aches. That work used measured bark extracts, not homeopathic pellets. It also carries the bleeding and allergy risks of aspirin-like drugs.

You will most often see these forms:

- Sugar pellets or pills, sold as 6C, 12C, 30C or 200C - Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base - Mother tincture, the strong undiluted bark extract - Low dilutions such as 1X, 2X or 3X, which still hold bark chemicals

The number and letter tell you how many times the liquid was watered down. A higher number means more dilution, not more strength in the normal sense.

Where it comes from:

Black willow bark has a long folk record for pain and fever, shared by many cultures.

Who should avoid Salix nigra?

  • Never give willow bark tincture or low dilutions to a child or teenager who has a fever, flu or chickenpox. Aspirin-like chemicals are linked to Reye's syndrome, a rare illness that harms the brain and liver and can kill.
  • Do not use the mother tincture or low dilutions if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, apixaban or heparin.
  • Do not use the mother tincture or low dilutions if you take aspirin, clopidogrel, ibuprofen or naproxen.
  • Do not use it if you are allergic to aspirin or salicylates, or if aspirin makes your asthma worse.
  • Do not use the mother tincture if you have a peptic ulcer (a sore in the lining of the stomach or gut) or a history of stomach bleeding.
  • Do not use the mother tincture if you have liver disease or kidney disease.
  • Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use the mother tincture in the week before planned surgery, because of bleeding risk.
  • Do not use alcohol-based drops if you are avoiding alcohol, and do not give them to a child.
  • Do not stop or lower a prescribed medicine in order to take this remedy.
  • Do not use this remedy in place of care for cancer, infection, or any serious or fast-changing illness.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your symptoms are new, getting worse, or have lasted more than two weeks. Also see a doctor for any pelvic pain that is severe, one-sided, or comes with fever, bleeding or feeling sick.

Get urgent help for unusual bruising, bleeding that will not stop, black or tarry stools, or blood in your vomit. Call emergency services for swelling of the face, lips or throat, a rash all over, or trouble breathing.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
