What is [RETIRED] Transcendental Meditation? Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a specific, trademarked meditation technique in which a practitioner silently repeats a personally assigned mantra — a meaningless sound — twice daily for about 20 minutes while sitting comfortably with eyes closed. Unlike mindfulness, which involves active attention training, TM is described as effortless: the goal is to let the mind settle naturally into a state of quiet awareness without trying to control thoughts. It was systematized and introduced globally by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the late 1950s, drawing on ancient Vedic practices. How does [RETIRED] Transcendental Meditation work? TM appears to activate the body's natural relaxation response, quieting the sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight) and strengthening the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) branch. Brain imaging studies show it increases alpha wave activity — a brainwave pattern linked to calm, restful alertness — and reduces the stress hormone cortisol over time. These shifts in the nervous system help explain the downstream effects on blood pressure, anxiety, and sleep quality. What forms does [RETIRED] Transcendental Meditation come in? TM is taught exclusively through certified TM teachers in a structured multi-session course. After learning, practitioners continue independently at home, twice daily. There is no app, book, or audio program that officially replicates certified TM instruction, though general mantra meditation apps share some features. Where it comes from: Derived from the ancient Vedic tradition of India, TM was brought to the West by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi beginning in 1958. It became widely known in the 1960s when the Beatles famously practiced it. Since then it has been one of the most researched meditation techniques in the world, with hundreds of published studies, including reviews by the American Heart Association.

Helps

What does [RETIRED] Transcendental Meditation help with? High blood pressure: TM is one of the best-studied natural interventions for blood pressure. Regular practice appears to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure meaningfully — enough that the American Heart Association gave it a positive review among mind-body approaches. The effect seems to come from calming the nervous system and reducing stress-driven constriction of blood vessels. Stress and anxiety: TM consistently reduces the body's output of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Practitioners typically report feeling calmer and more emotionally resilient within a few weeks. The twice-daily practice creates a kind of physiological reset that prevents stress from building up unchecked. Heart disease risk: Beyond blood pressure, TM has been studied in people with established heart disease, where it was linked to fewer heart attacks, strokes, and deaths over a multi-year follow-up in one landmark trial. It also appears to improve arterial flexibility and reduce cholesterol-related risk markers in some studies. PTSD and trauma: TM has been studied specifically in veterans and active-duty military with PTSD, showing meaningful reductions in PTSD symptom scores — sometimes comparable to therapy. Because TM doesn't require re-engaging with traumatic memories, many people with trauma find it easier to stick with than traditional exposure-based therapies. Sleep and insomnia: Practicing TM regularly helps people fall asleep faster and report better sleep quality. This is likely linked to the overall reduction in cortisol and nervous system arousal that comes from the twice-daily sessions, making it easier for the body to wind down at night. Depression: Several trials have found meaningful drops in depression scores among TM practitioners. The practice seems to reduce the rumination and stress-hormone activity that drive depressive episodes, and improvements in mood often appear alongside better sleep and reduced anxiety. ADHD (focus and attention): Small but promising studies in students and adults with ADHD show that regular TM practice can improve focus, reduce hyperactivity, and help with emotional regulation. The increase in alpha brainwave activity may play a role in supporting calmer, more organized thinking. Burnout and chronic fatigue: TM's deep rest — often described as deeper than sleep in terms of metabolic slowdown — can help people who feel chronically depleted. Regular practitioners report higher energy levels and greater emotional reserves, making it a popular tool for high-stress professions. Substance use and addiction: TM has been studied in programs targeting alcohol, tobacco, and drug dependence, with some evidence of reduced use and cravings. The reduction in anxiety and stress — which are major relapse triggers — appears to be the key mechanism here.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
