Qiang Huo Sheng Shi Tang

A long-standing staple of Chinese medicine for nearly eight centuries, but human trial evidence is insufficient; we found no reliable studies showing it

What is Qiang Huo Sheng Shi Tang? Qiang Huo Sheng Shi Tang is a classical Chinese herbal formula. You drink it warm, like a tea. It is used for aching, stiff muscles and joints. The ache is most often in the neck, shoulders, upper back or low back. People take it when cold, wet weather makes the ache worse. It is also known as Notopterygium Decoction to Overcome Dampness. It holds seven herbs, but it is sold as one fixed mix. So this page treats it as one product. You do not adjust the herbs one by one; you take the whole formula. Evidence verdict: the formula has a long, well recorded history in Chinese medicine. But we could not find good human trials that test whether it works. Long use tells you a remedy has been valued for centuries. It does not tell you that it works. That gap applies to everything on this page. How does Qiang Huo Sheng Shi Tang work? Honestly, nobody has shown how it works in the body. The traditional story and the lab story are two different things. In Chinese medicine, the formula is said to release "wind-damp" from the surface of the body. That is a traditional idea about cold, wet, heavy aching. It is not a Western diagnosis. The warm, scented herbs are said to open the channels and ease pain. In the lab, several of these herbs hold compounds that cut inflammation (swelling and irritation). Some also relax smooth muscle in test tubes and in animals. That is a long way from proof that a cup of the tea eases your back. Treat any story about how it works as an idea being tested, not a fact. What forms does Qiang Huo Sheng Shi Tang come in? You will usually meet it in one of three forms. Raw dried herbs come as a packet. You simmer them in water at home to make a decoction (a strong herbal tea). This is the classical form. Granules or a strong powder dissolve in hot water. This is the most common modern form. It is also the easiest to dose. Pills and capsules are made from the strong extract. They are handy. But the dose per pill varies a lot between makers. Quality varies widely. Buy from a supplier that tests for heavy metals, pesticides and correct plant identity. Keep the packaging, so you can show a doctor just what you took. Where it comes from: The formula comes from Chinese medicine. It is credited to Li Dong-yuan, one of the great doctors of the Jin-Yuan period. His work was published in 1247. It has stayed in use ever since. It still appears in standard modern Chinese formula textbooks. So it counts as a long-standing staple of one tradition, not a folk curiosity. Its classical role has barely changed in nearly eight centuries. It is for short-term use only. It suits aching, heavy, stiff limbs and a tight, sore neck and back after cold and wet.

Helps

What does Qiang Huo Sheng Shi Tang help with? Neck and shoulder stiffness and aching: This is the classical target for the formula, and it is what most practitioners prescribe it for. Traditional texts describe a heavy, tight ache across the shoulders and upper back that is worse in cold, wet weather and eases with warmth. We found no good human trials testing it for neck or shoulder pain, so the support here is traditional only. Lower back ache that feels worse in cold, damp weather: Chinese medicine uses it for a dull, heavy lower back ache that stiffens in the cold and loosens as you move and warm up. It is not the traditional choice for long-term back pain caused by wear and tear, nor for shooting pain down a leg. There is no reliable trial evidence for this use. General body aches at the start of a cold or flu-like illness: The formula's original description covers aching all over with chills, a headache and no sweating in the first day or two of a chill. Traditionally it is a short-term measure, given for a few days at most. There is no trial evidence that it shortens an illness or prevents complications. Headache at the back of the head with a stiff neck: Man jing zi and gao ben are the herbs traditionally aimed at this kind of headache, which sits at the base of the skull and pulls into the neck. This use is well described in classical texts and completely untested in modern trials. A new, severe or unusual headache needs a doctor, not a herb. Joint aches that shift from place to place: Traditional use covers wandering, weather-sensitive joint aches. This is not a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, gout or any other diagnosed joint disease, and it should never replace medicine you have been prescribed for one. No human trials support this use.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
