Qian Hu

A long-standing staple of Chinese medicine (T2), but no human trials test it alone, so the evidence grade is insufficient.

Home

What is Qian Hu? Qian Hu is the dried root of a plant called Peucedanum praeruptorum. In English it is known as hogfennel root. Chinese medicine uses it as a cough and phlegm herb. It is a single herb, not a blend. It is used for a cough with thick phlegm, a tight chest, and colds with fever. It is almost always boiled with other herbs in a tea. The herb has a long record of use, but long use is not proof that it works. No human trial of Qian Hu on its own has been published. What we know comes from lab dishes and animal tests. How does Qian Hu work? Nobody knows for sure how Qian Hu works in people. Lab tests show its coumarins (a group of plant compounds) can relax muscle in airways and blood vessels. Animal work hints that it may loosen phlegm and calm a cough. In Chinese terms, it is said to send lung qi down and clear phlegm. That is one tradition's way of sorting herbs. It is not a proven body process. None of this lab work tells us what the herb does in a sick person. Cell and animal results often fail to show up in people. What forms does Qian Hu come in? Qian Hu is sold as dried root slices. A herbalist boils the slices in water to make a tea. You may also find powder, granules or pills. Some slices are fried with honey first. That form is used for a drier cough. Buy from a seller who tests for lead and other heavy metals. Where it comes from: Qian Hu has been used in China for about 1,500 years . It is listed in the Ming Yi Bie Lu, an old Chinese herb text. Later books kept it in the group of herbs that clear phlegm and cool a wind-heat cold (an old term for a cold with fever and a sore throat).

Helps

What does Qian Hu help with? Cough with thick phlegm: This is the main old use. Chinese doctors give it when the phlegm is thick and yellow and hard to bring up. No human trial has tested the herb by itself for this. Tight or full chest with wheeze: Old texts pair it with a chest that feels blocked or full. Lab work shows its coumarins can relax airway muscle in animal tissue. That is a long way from proof in people. Colds with fever and sore throat: It is added to cold formulas that aim to cool heat and ease a cough. It is not used alone for this. No trial shows it shortens a cold. Long-running chest cough: Herbalists may use it in mixes for a lasting chesty cough. A cough that lasts more than three weeks needs a doctor, not a herb. There is no trial support here.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
