Niu Bang Zi is the dried ripe fruit (usually called the seed) of the burdock plant, Arctium lappa. In Chinese herbal medicine it is used mainly for sore throat, fever with cough, and itchy skin rashes. It is a single herb, not a blended product.
Practitioners describe it as cooling and slippery, so it is also used when stools are dry and hard. It is nearly always combined with other herbs in a formula rather than taken alone.
Long use inside a tradition is not the same as proof that something works. Testing of Niu Bang Zi is mostly laboratory and animal work, and we could not find published human trials of the seed on its own. Nothing in this document should be read as a promise of a result.
In Chinese medicine terms, Niu Bang Zi is said to release "wind-heat" from the surface of the body, ease the throat, push rashes out to the skin and loosen the bowels.
In laboratory terms, the seed's lignans (a group of plant compounds) have shown anti-inflammatory and germ-slowing activity in test tubes and in animals. Some of the same compounds lowered blood sugar in animal studies.
None of this has been confirmed in people taking the seed. Treat the mechanism as a reasonable idea, not a proven pathway.
Whole or crushed dried fruit is the standard form. It is simmered in water to make a decoction (a strong herbal tea).
Many dispensaries supply it stir-fried, which is said to soften its cooling, bowel-loosening effect. Granules and powdered extracts are also sold for stirring into hot water.
Capsules and tinctures exist but are less common in Chinese practice. Burdock root products are sold widely too, but the root is a different part of the plant and is not interchangeable with the seed.
Burdock fruit appears in Chinese materia medica texts from roughly the 5th to 7th century onward, under names including Shu Nian Zi. It became a standard throat and rash herb in classical formulas such as Yin Qiao San.
It is also eaten and used in Japan and Korea, though usually as the root vegetable (gobo) rather than the seed.
Call emergency services straight away if your lips, tongue, face or throat start to swell, or if you have trouble breathing. Those are signs of a severe allergic reaction.
See a doctor the same day if you have a sore throat with a fever above 38.5C, trouble swallowing, a stiff neck, or a rash that spreads fast.
Also book a doctor's appointment if your symptoms have not improved after 3 days, if diarrhoea lasts more than 2 days, or if you have diabetes and your blood sugar readings start dropping low.
Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
