What is Pyrroloquinoline Quinone (PQQ)? Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a small, vitamin-like molecule discovered in the 1970s that is found in tiny amounts in many plant foods and even in human breast milk. It was once debated as a potential B-vitamin, though that classification was not confirmed. What makes PQQ special is its ability to trigger the creation of new mitochondria — the energy-generating centers inside your cells — a process called mitochondrial biogenesis. How does Pyrroloquinoline Quinone (PQQ) work? PQQ works by activating key cellular proteins, including PGC-1α, that signal the body to build more mitochondria. It also acts as a powerful antioxidant, capable of cycling through thousands of reactions without being depleted, which makes it unusually effective at neutralizing harmful free radicals. By supporting both the quantity and health of mitochondria, PQQ helps cells produce energy more efficiently and recover from oxidative stress. What forms does Pyrroloquinoline Quinone (PQQ) come in? PQQ supplements are most commonly available as capsules or tablets, typically at doses of 10–20 mg per day. It is often combined with CoQ10 in formulations targeting energy and cognitive health, as the two compounds support overlapping mitochondrial pathways. Standalone PQQ powders exist but are less common. Where it comes from: PQQ was first identified as a bacterial cofactor in the 1970s and later found in human tissues and food. Interest in its role in human health accelerated in the early 2000s after researchers demonstrated its role in promoting mitochondrial biogenesis in mammals, sparking ongoing investigation into its potential for cognitive support, cardiovascular health, and healthy aging.

Helps

What does Pyrroloquinoline Quinone (PQQ) help with? Brain fog and mental clarity: PQQ has been shown in human studies to improve measures of attention, working memory, and mental processing speed in middle-aged and older adults. Researchers believe this is largely driven by its support for mitochondrial health in brain cells, which are among the most energy-hungry cells in the body. Memory and cognitive function: Human trials using 20 mg of PQQ daily have reported improvements in short-term memory and cognitive performance, particularly in older adults experiencing age-related cognitive decline. The combination of PQQ with CoQ10 appears to amplify these effects in some studies. Low energy and fatigue: By encouraging the body to grow more mitochondria and protecting existing ones from damage, PQQ helps cells generate energy more efficiently. People with fatigue related to oxidative stress or mitochondrial inefficiency tend to notice the most improvement. Poor sleep quality: One human study found that PQQ supplementation improved sleep quality, with participants reporting better sleep onset and fewer mid-night awakenings. This may be linked to its role in reducing oxidative stress, which can disrupt normal sleep architecture. Oxidative stress and cellular aging: PQQ is one of the most powerful antioxidants identified in nature, capable of performing thousands of oxidation-reduction cycles without breaking down. This makes it particularly effective at protecting DNA and cell membranes from the kind of damage that accumulates with aging. Inflammation: PQQ has been shown to reduce markers of inflammation in human studies, including C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Lowering chronic low-grade inflammation is important for a wide range of health conditions, from cardiovascular disease to cognitive decline. Mitochondrial dysfunction: PQQ is one of the few compounds demonstrated in human cell research to actually stimulate the creation of new mitochondria, not just protect existing ones. This makes it a standout option for people dealing with conditions linked to poor mitochondrial function, including chronic fatigue and age-related decline. Heart health support: Early human research suggests PQQ may reduce markers of cardiac stress and inflammation, and animal studies show protection against cardiac ischemia (reduced blood flow). Human evidence in this area is still emerging but looks promising. Metabolic energy issues: Because mitochondria are central to how the body converts food into usable energy, supporting mitochondrial health with PQQ may benefit people with metabolic issues tied to poor cellular energy production, including those managing blood sugar imbalances or generalized fatigue.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
