Platina

A long-standing staple of homeopathy only, with no human trial evidence separating it from placebo (a dummy pill).

Home

What is Platina? Platina is a homeopathic remedy made from metallic platinum, a hard silver-white metal. It is a single remedy, not a blend. Homeopaths give it mainly for strong mood states and for some period problems in women. The remedy is made by serial dilution. The metal is ground with milk sugar, then diluted again and again, with hard shaking at each step. At 30C, the strength most often sold in shops, essentially none of the starting metal is left. Here is the honest bottom line. Platina has been used in homeopathy for close to 200 years , but long use is not proof that a thing works. In trials, homeopathic remedies have not been shown to do more than placebo (a dummy pill with no active drug in it). How does Platina work? There is no accepted physical way for Platina to act on the body at 30C, because no platinum is left in the pill. Homeopathy works from its own rule, called like cures like. Healthy people who took platinum reported feelings of pride, contempt and numbness. So the remedy is given to people whose own symptoms look like that picture. Homeopaths also hold that shaking at each step leaves an imprint of the metal in the water or sugar. This idea has not been shown to be true by normal lab testing. When people feel better after taking it, the likely reasons are placebo, time, and the care and attention of a long consultation. What forms does Platina come in? Platina comes in a few simple forms. Most shops sell small sugar pellets that you let melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in alcohol and water are also common. Other forms include tablets and single-dose tubes of pellets. Labels show the strength as 6C, 30C, 200C or as 6X, 12X and so on. Higher numbers mean more dilution, not more drug. Buy from a known maker and check the strength on the box. Avoid mother tinctures and very low potencies unless a trained practitioner has told you which one to take. Where it comes from: Platina entered homeopathy in the 1830s. Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who founded homeopathy, tested it on healthy people and wrote up the symptoms they reported. Later writers such as Constantine Hering and James Tyler Kent kept it in their repertories, which are the index books homeopaths use. It became a standard remedy for a pattern of pride, contempt and pelvic complaints. It is a staple of one tradition only. It has no role in Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, or Western herbal practice.

Helps

What does Platina help with? Emotional upset marked by pride, contempt or looking down on others: This is the classic homeopathic picture for Platina. Old texts describe a person who feels grand and looks down on family and friends, then feels lonely because of it. No human trial has tested Platina for mood or behaviour, so this rests on case notes only. Anxiety and low mood: Homeopaths pick Platina when anxiety comes with a sense of being better than others, or with a fear of losing control. There is no trial evidence for this use. If your mood is low for more than two weeks, or you have thoughts of harming yourself, see a doctor now. Painful periods (cramping pain with the monthly bleed): Old homeopathic texts list Platina for cramping period pain with a very sensitive pelvis. No published human trial has tested Platina for period pain. Simple pain relief, heat and a check-up have much better support. Heavy or early periods: Texts describe dark, clotted, early bleeding as a Platina picture. There is no trial evidence. Heavy bleeding can point to fibroids, thyroid problems or anaemia (low iron in the blood), so get it looked at. Ovarian pain: Homeopaths use Platina for burning or pressing pain on one side, often the left. No trial has tested this. Sudden one-sided pelvic pain can be an emergency, so do not treat it at home. Painful sex from tight pelvic muscles (vaginismus): This is one of the better known traditional uses for Platina. The old picture is extreme sensitivity and spasm on touch. No published human trial covers it. Pelvic floor physiotherapy and counselling do have real evidence behind them. Numbness, coldness or crawling feelings in the skin: Provings described numb, cold patches and a feeling of tight bands on the skin. There is no trial evidence for this. New numbness can be a nerve or circulation problem and needs a doctor.

Platina has been used in homeopathy for close to 200 years, but long use is not proof that a thing works.

Where it comes from:

Platina entered homeopathy in the 1830s.

Who should avoid Platina?

  • Do not use if you are taking cancer drugs made from platinum, such as cisplatin or carboplatin, unless your cancer doctor agrees
  • Do not use if you have a known allergy to platinum or platinum salts, which can bring on rash, wheeze or swelling
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease and the product is a mother tincture or a low potency such as 1X to 6X, as these may still hold traces of the metal
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor has said it is fine, because low potencies have not been tested for safety in pregnancy
  • Do not use if you are thinking of stopping, lowering or delaying a medicine your doctor prescribed
  • Do not use if you would be treating a serious or urgent problem at home, such as heavy bleeding, chest pain, sudden pelvic pain, a bad infection or a mental health crisis
  • Do not use if you plan to give it to a baby or young child without advice from a doctor
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are made from it

When should you see a doctor?

Get emergency help now if you have trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or a spreading rash after a dose. Also get emergency help for sudden severe pelvic pain, or bleeding that soaks a pad in an hour or less.

See a doctor the same week if your periods change, get much heavier, or become very painful. Do the same for new numbness, cold hands or feet, or pain during sex.

See a doctor within two weeks if your symptoms have not improved. If your mood is very low, or you have thoughts of harming yourself, get help straight away and do not wait.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
